Beaten in the ruck, but Dyke was everywhere. Had a game-leading 5 clearances.
First game goal for The Headband!
The Pie was >10metres clear out the back, but the ball bounced badly for her, allowing Tassiopoulos to close in and lay the successful tackle.
Next week Tamsin Crook is set to be the youngest player of the modern VFLW era to reach 50 games.
But Tia Davidge is the current league-leading chance to break that record (in 2026). This was her 22nd game, just before reaching 19.5yo. Has missed one game in the past two years.
Two impressive CLUNKS early on, and finished with two goals. Spent all of this forward game, unlike her recent decent time in the midfield.
Maybe Clarke and Gamble (below) didn’t have great games, but they’re perhaps responsible for four goals (Gough and Molan) we don’t kick otherwise.
Ump pls.
It wasn’t paid.
After playing her first-ever midfield stint in the second half of the AFLW final last year, MORCS got given another chance in this game.
14 disposals, 5 tackles, 4 clearances
Bin Chickettes are in the Melbourne Virgin lounge currently sitting next table to us
Thank them for destroying the Hawk’s percentage.
And then tell them to nick off out of the VFL. It’s a freaking joke.
Spoke to one girl called Montana and said thanks from you. She seemed like a nice girl so didn’t have the heart to tell her to nick off out of the VFL though
Ham (179cm, game-leading 22 disposals today) or Beruldsen (165cm, 16 disposals and 2 goals)?
Been more than three years since I first saw the former play, and instantly concluded she was a gun. She ended up being the #1 draft pick and Sydney got the Victorian to nominate for NSW (that loophole has since been eliminated).
Must be the former as I’m 178cm and she was about my height.
QUARTER ONE
- 1:00 the yobbo is joined by many others screaming BALL. Ump says NOPE.
- Seconds later, commentary starts denigrating Essendon fans.
- Gemma, why are you talking about MORCS playing in defence? Apparently MORCS is smart but nowhere near as fit as their Porter. And she’s on Remmos and Ingram early anyway.
- 4:15 Davidge go CLUNK.
- 6:15 Chaston weaves through traffic and hits up the leading Davidge CLUNK. Her opponent is notable taller, but Tia don’t care.
- Tassiopoulos is quick multiple times in this game to get to the goal square after setting up others for set shots. Not asking for the ball, but ready to shepherd or compete if the kick goes wrong.
- 8:45 Chaston makes a brilliant tap to Robinson as she falls backwards. The pass forward is quick and spot-on for Tia to CLUNK. That is a NICE first 9 minutes for Tia.
- GEMMA APOLOGISES FOR STATING WE WON OUR FIRST GAME LAST WEEK. I’m not sure how many other people told her, but I was certainly one who directly informed her
- Jordan gets her first CBA for the year.
- Our tall defenders lost a LOT of contests today.
- 11:40 Their Walsh pulls Melnikas down on top of herself, and injures herself. Melnikas either felt or heard the ailment, because she instantly looks back to the opponent and then signals to the bench.
- Chaston taking kick-outs and you can see why: such a reliable long kick.
- 16:50 from a distance we all thought it was the wrong decision, but the ump was right. LOL at the Pie fan in the background calling for BALL versus us, clapping when the ump signals it, and then being totally nonplussed when it goes the other way
- 17:20 Robinson to Chaston to MFord, candy selling, to Melnikas for the kick to CHF, Pie deadset caught dropping the ball by Davidge. Ump say NOPE, but Tia don’t care. Richardson pressure allows Gough to pop the ball over, and Tia goes BANG. Great sequence.
- 19:10 that is a fantastic mark by their Porter running back with the ball.
QUARTER TWO
- Ha, Ryan’s opponent actually starts on her for a change, and Drew immediately finds enough space to get the ball and hit up the strong Molan mark.
- 0:35 creative tap by Richardson to Jordan running past.
- 1:05 Bateman fumbles a bit, but then hits the shepherd to make up for it. She then takes a mark running back at 1:30
- Per my keyboard autocomplete, I am now singing EMT! Oi! every time Emily Tassiopoulos is involved. I said before this game that she applies pressure, and it was very on display.
- 5:25 This timestamp is a decent example of how Drew is low-key pretty damn good at staying composed under pressure and getting the ball to advantage.
- 6:00 the “body work” was a two hand push in the number on the back of MFord. Unfortunately, it ends up as another example of our talls getting beaten today.
- 7:05 LOL; for a fraction of a second Dyke clearly forgot which direction we were kicking, but remembered before getting the big kick off!
- 8:40 Morcs gets dragged to the ground after getting rid of it, and looks to be in serious pain for a sec.
- 9:50 EFFECTIVE RUCK TAP BY JAYDA!
- 12:50 Great tackle by EMT! Oi!
- 14:20 That’s ■■■■■■■ opportunity, ump. Ran five metres, fend-off, tackled, drops the ball. This has been a sustained period in their half and we are gang-tackling to stop them scoring (and potentially taking the lead off us).
- 16:25 that is a shithouse missed low-five, Collingwood
- 17:00 Pies get a fraction-of-a-second HTB free, of course. Luckily Bateman takes the intercept mark.
- 18:05 Richardson makes a stack of efforts in rapid succession (and a nice blind turn) to set up Gough’s first goal.
- Some Fox or Seven brainacs would love the play from the CBA, where we have three players surging forward with Pies straggling behind. It doesn’t actually work out, but the blind turn (sorry, “spinning pirouette”) by Dyke gets it forward, and the double-hand tap (not a scoop) by Redford to Gough is just fantastic.
- There will be a lot of attention paid to Gough’s back-to-back goals, but those ten or so minutes of intense defence before that were at least as good. The two things combined broke the game.
QUARTER THREE
- Gough in for her first CBA for EFC.
- 0:20 the commentary team love our (not-ruck) taps to advantage as much as I do. This one was by Dyke to Huggard.
- When you look at the stats for Tassiopoulos you’ll see just 8 disposals and 7 tackles. But they are effective disposals and very effective tackles.
- 0:40 everyone was screaming for Richo to present and assert herself, and she did. CLUNK.
- 0:55 This is a gun rebound by a surprisingly fast Peterson… until the bounce goes wrong, and Porter immediately goals
- That’s three goals in three minutes either side of half-time, and that will end up as the game’s margin.
- The photo of MORCS being throttled occurs at 7:55. She did not get the free
- 11:50 Day pulled that goal out of nowhere. Very good.
- At this point scores are 8-10 but we still lead by 8. This kicking straight thing is pretty cool; we should try it more often.
- I can understand why Pie VFLW fans might be disillusioned, but WTF were they today? At 13:55 you can hear the Bomber fans in fine voice with the double BALL. The crowd was still sub-Hangar.
- That leads into a nice sequence where Tassiopoulos (oi!) and Radford move it quick to give Richardson the best chance (she had got deeper than her opponent). Those who get in position early get the tacos. CLUNK!
- Watch Mahony’s repeat effort at the centre. Sees ball, gets ball (or tackles whoever has the ball). Overall, she could be a tiny bit less ambitious and give the ball off earlier and be caught fewer times, but it’s been a very fine pluck from WA (she’s currently equal-fourth for disposals in the VFLW). Obviously has elite endurance – just counting up those CBAs tells you that.
- 16:15 Chaston is our BOG in this game, easily, and that would be true even without this ridiculous goal from inside the centre square. It’s not even a big windup from them; just a chip kick.
- Tash Hardy is about the 15th person to get the high-five from El after that goal. CAPTAIN’S GOAL.
QUARTER FOUR:
- 2:05 Morcom cops a knee in the stomach.
- 2:25 Morris-Dalton was just too good for us today… but her set shot kick here is utter
- 3:00 a CHF doesn’t have to mark everything, but if you can grab it on the lead and feed it out, good work. Jayda does exactly that here, smooth and fast as.
- 5:00 into the last quarter before there is a lasso free. Not many throw-ins either. That is indicative of a quality game.
- 6:00 Davidge, to Gough, to Radford, to Molan mark and goal.
- 15:55 lovely kick by Radford for us to run onto on, and then repeated efforts by Tassiopoulos (oi!)
- Molan has dropped back as an extra number with 4 minutes to go in the game; will double-team a Pie and mark with 50 seconds left.
- Mahoney having a big last quarter.
- Damn it, Gough
– that would have been a cool ending to get your third goal on the final siren.
