From the other side… we gave them “moments of hell” :smiling_imp:

Williamstown fought hard against Essendon but were unable to claim their third win of the season.

The Seagulls travelled out to The Hangar to take on the Dons in a bid to bounce back after two close losses in recent weeks.

The tone was set early with the girls, led by Megan Williamson who laid an aggressive run-down tackle early in the first quarter. Coach Penny Cula-Reid was very impressed with the tough on-baller. “it’s no surprise she’s won multiple best and fairests, her knowledge of the game is exceptional,” she said.

The girls trailed by 10 points at quarter time.

The Seagulls started to hit their straps at the start of the second term, with Aimee Whelan slotting the Gulls’ first of the day.

As the ball started to find itself in Williamstown’s forward half, Lauren Gooden provided a key option down the line with relentless effort. But a stand out for the entire game was Ruby Tripodi, whose form is pleasing Cula-Reid.

“She’s starting to understand how good she is … she’s taken on so much responsibility as a leader of this Club,” she said.

Essendon jagged a late goal to bring the margin back out to 10 points at the main break.

It was end to end football in the third quarter as captain Erin Meade led from the front as she provided both run and pressure on the half back flank. Even with countless efforts from Ella Baxter down back it was hard to stem the flow of Essendon’s fast ball movement.

The Dons led by 17 points at three-quarter time.

There were plenty of promising signs in the last quarter as for majority of the last term, Williamstown held possession in their forward 50. For all of the Gulls’ hard fought effort, reward finally came when Williamson capped off her outstanding performance with a goal.

Unfortunately, the Bombers outplayed the Gulls and ran away as 30-point victors.

Cula-Reid is focusing on the positives leaving Tullamarine and trying to prepare her side for whatever is to come.

“I think trying to get the side into uncomfortable scenarios helps a lot … trying to find those golden nuggets in the moments of hell, we can really draw from them.”

Some close-up tackling action:

After the match we had an extended huddle… likely with a “if you do that next week you’ll get murdered” message.

Not wanting to go all Nino, but we need some big-bodied midfielders: it’s why Ashley-Coooper has left the back line for the midfield the last two weeks.

I believe said big-bodied midfielder has a first name of Georgie… gimme Georgie and Georgia in the middle.

Our smalls are hard-as (particularly Ugle and Snell, the latter coming off a five-day break from the Vic Country game) but at that size you’re more likely to get worn down.

On that size thing, we should bring the like of Quigley or DeMatteo back in. That may allow us to have the solid Frew on the ball a bit longer.

Stats are up in the app (we are the blue team). Almost identical team stats, but obviously we were more efficient.

Willy had the three biggest collectors of the ball in Tripodi, Meade and Whelan (20, 19, and 18 respectively).

Frew is third despite spending most of the day as a deep forward.

Two NAB League girls topped our tackling stats (Snell 10, Friswell 9). They had a much bigger influence on the game than their disposal tallies indicate.

Basic stats never tell the full story, of course: second-least disposals is Gardner, and I agree with the official bests including her.

Paired with her as KPD was Lennox, also named in the bests: she is very impressive as a 17yo key defender. Calm, kills marks, and a reliable long kick.

Julian was also a star defender: great nous and another really good kick. This hadn’t come through during her earlier stints on-ball, where I guess she was more rushed.

Hell, let’s just credit the whole backline for that (eventual) comfy win: CBomb (named in the bests) and Morcom were the small defenders and saved us many times.

I did not perceive Nattie Macdonald had that many disposals at the time…

Went into the Pies/Saints stats to see particular threats: Alice Burke of the Saints had 35 disposals in 80 minutes!

@karmabomber putting up some photos.

No one has ever said captain Courtney doesn’t demonstrate desperation.
