Impressed with Ayre today, both back and then the one quarter forward. Has more tricks than just brute strength.
Appleby started spritely (5 disposals in the first quarter, and getting to a bunch of other contests) before only doing that number for the next three. Got her debut goal though.
Davies is barely holding onto her “starting five” position in the forward line. Has kicked 2.6 in the last 6 games, and was team-low stats today (4 official disposals, though I counted 4 in the first and 1 in the last).
[Davies did apply a fair bit of defensive pressure in that second quarter. Also laid the tackle that led to goal #4 in the third quarter. And I just worked out Davies swapped ends with Ayre in that last quarter.]
I apologise for pointing out earlier in the week that since 1965 no AFL/VFL player with at least 35 goals (i.e. same as Frew) has been as accurate as her. Nek minnit: 0.3
She was not alone: Dicker 1.4 another culprit. As a forward she’s racking up serious amounts of stats, though, and scaring the brown stuff out of opponents.
While all around you are losing their heads… geez what a 24 hours for Mia-Rae. Kicks 3 straight, catches up with new premiership EFC-listed player Asiak, leading the Ann Roulton ceremonies, presenting the jumper to Appleby. Captain, my captain!
I’m very happy with that call. She’s a smooth mover and it’s great she has debuted in her fourth year with us.
Nanscawen: LOL Norf.
Anthony ran around for the first time this year without knee strapping, and there were periods (third quarter, particularly) when she was running amok. Was kicking it well today. Bizarrely, she had zero tackles today (officially: stats definitely missed one in the second quarter).
You know what’s funny? Us all having a sook when we scored the most points AND conceded the fewest points for the round.
The last kicks were awful, but we did a hell of a lot right.
While watching the replay, I categorised the outcomes of Cornish and Elarmaly in ruck contests (30 and 23 contests respectively).
Player | Bad | Neutral | Good |
---|---|---|---|
Cornish | 47% | 43% | 10% |
Elarmaly | 35% | 35% | 30% |
Elarmaly was always looking to make physical contact and cramp the opponent. She’s only 173cm, so that was very much necessary.
Hit-outs may have gone 9-40, but quantity ≠ quality. Put a huge asterisk against Borg being #1 ruck of the league.

FCFC report:
By Benjamin Hann
CARLTON were outmatched by a very strong Essendon team but had plenty of positive moments in their match at The Hangar.
The Blues were undermanned going into the match, only to lose gun midfielder Ashlee Thorneycroft early in the second quarter.
Quarter one
Essendon began the match by dominating possession but were unable to capitalise until they finally broke through halfway through the term. Carlton’s defence was under the pump from the outset, but thanks to some valiant defending from the likes of Nadia Moore, they were able to hold out the Bombers for the majority of the quarter. Essendon’s Georgia Nanscawen was the driving force for the home side, accumulating a monster 11 disposals by the first break.
Quarter two
Essendon started the second quarter in a similar fashion to the first, with the side wasting a multitude of opportunities as they struggled with accuracy in the windy conditions. The match became largely a kick-to-kick affair, with the ball moving between the 50s for most of the term. While the Blues certainly played better going forwards, the match could have been blown out if not for the Bombers’ missed chances, with the home side managing seven behinds without scoring a major.
Quarter three
Essendon were finally able to break the goal drought in the match eight minutes in, after Carlton were able to repel yet more inside 50s from the home side. The Blues almost kicked one of their own in a rare foray forward when Mia Cowan hit the woodwork with her kick around the body, before the Bombers quickly moved the ball the other way to score their fourth of the afternoon. The Blues definitely wrestled some momentum that quarter, but the midfield continued to struggle to handle Nanscawen who had 24 by the final change.
Quarter four
The last term started on a positive for Carlton, with Teagan Brett scoring her first goal for the club and the team’s first for the game. However, the Bombers quickly responded with two of their own, with the scoreboard beginning to represent the dominance that they had over the Blues. Carlton refused to lie down though, with the side creating plenty of late chances, resulting in a contested mark and goal for Cowan just as the final siren went.
Match Summary:
Carlton: 0.1.1 0.1.1 0.2.2 2.3.15
Essendon: 2.3.15 2.10.22 4.14.38 7.19.61
Goals: Brett, Cowan.
Best: Klingbeil, Gurr, Jarvis, Borg, Moore.
Stafford says:
“I thought the girls endeavour today was fantastic, they stuck it out for four quarters against a really good opposition. We’re obviously focused on our continued growth and really looking forward to the second half of the season.”
