Yep I went to both JB and a local record store last weekend first time in ages.
$60 for a standard albumn
$80-90 for rereleases
$120+ for good knows why
Safe to say I didn’t buy anything.

Youve just described Heaven…
On the subject…
Id hate to be just developing an interest in the medium now, as a good portion of ‘youngens’ seem to be. Theyre just not affordable for a large chunk of them (or myself to be honest). The industry (whatever that is) is pricing themselves out of the lives of an entire generation. One that actually seems interested in records.
I know everythings going up, but fark. That awful swine Ed Sherrins new record was like 80 bucks in JB today. I dunno if it was a double (I didnt want to be seen touching it), but either way, an obscene price.
Fkg cncr.
Oh…also…
LMW buys me resissues…10,000gm whatever tf for my birthday and Christmas.
It’s so lovely.
Edit: better than socks. Although I’m not bagging cool socks.
Thats awesome.
I bought my 6 year olds a Bluey record for the last birthday. It was their first record. They were very excited.
Theyre actually showing great interest in my records in the last few weeks. Theyll flip threw em looking at all the lovely artwork, whilst I sit, drink beer and tell myself what great parenting Im executing. Occasionally, much to their delight, theyll find a cover with “boobies!!” on it. Raucous laughter ensues…
Trying not to get obsessed on one artist…
Did the same with my youngest daughter who liked the cute small records so for Xmas a few years ago she received an automatic turntable with Bluetooth so she could connect her speaker. I then trawled Discogs for a stack of cheap 45s most from the 80’s. She had a blast and played DJ Xmas night and indoctrinated some of her young friends. Fast forward to now and she just bought the new Mitski record (very very good) and her older sister came home with Smiths Hatful of Hollow. I think I’ve done something right.
Excellent work.
Had some great finds this weekend. Buying vinyl in Manila is such a crapshoot. A graded VG+ record is one which looks like it was scrubbed with wire brush rather than a Good which looks like it spent half it’s life doubling as a pair of childs skates. In my travels though I found one guy who gets a ton of truly excellent condition Japanese presses. The Japanese presses some say have a bright upper end. I love them and this weekend picked up an OG London Calling, Yes Album and Talking Heads Remain in Light. They were $40 each but spotless condition and sound fantastic. Riding home a guy had a stall selling Filipino presses of records. These sound surprisingly great but just very hard to get them in a decent condition. Picked up Ghost in the Machine for 5 bucks and it’s flawless, flat and no crackle. The covers are often pretty different and look a bit odd and the cardboard itself is super thick. Riding my bike back today to see him again after work.
They still are that price or even less on iTunes
Haha, I had an REM dvd of video clips on the other day and the kids were interested in who they were so I said sit down and have a watch.
Then the Pop Song 89 clip came on, and it’s Stipe and a few other people dancing topless except the other people are all women. Cue riotous laughter and confusion.
This is inspiring, I need to try it!
That is a magnificent sounding issue, it’s one of my most treasured.
I’ve gone deep on Japanese records for years and have definitely had ones that were too bright for my liking, flipping them for cheaper better-sounding UK originals to my ears. But some are truly amazing, like London Calling.
Back in the early nineties a mate of mine was full on into Japanese pressings and I was like…okay…
Whatever, man.
Pay twice as much if you like…
Whats cooler than an OBI strip??
Unironically love this album.
And I was the first to correct wiki about the lead singer after one day listening to it and thinking…wait a minute…that’s not Sharon O’Neill, that’s Deborah Conway!
And I’m never letting go of that.
Yep, I do hear it and sometime adjust the bass to compensate on some pressings. London Calling is truly a fantastic pressing but the one that has floored me soundlwise is The Yes Album. I’m not a prog rock fan but have always liked “I’ve Seen All Good People” and heard the Yes Album wasn’t quite as proggy. The sound of this thing is just something else. My wife rarely comments on my music other than to tell me to turn it down but she even commented on the sound of the vocals on this 50+ year old record. I have a Japanese Buckingham Nicks as well that also sound great. Amazingly that Filipino Ghost in the Machine easily outdoes my old Australian pressing, it truly sparkles but after reading some more about them it appears the Filipino stuff often used the same stampers as the Japanese ones. If you see any around cheap (they are heavy with thick cardboard) and they are in good condition I wouldn’t hesitate. Here’s a pick of my local pusher.
Haha, he was onto something compared to what they go for now.
For me they were just what was in the shops here in Osaka, obviously, and one or two decades ago they weren’t even pricey so it was natural to stock up. Now I see people want them, and I can sell a bunch off and get a decent press from another country instead. No way I’d be forking out now for some of the ones I have.
