Radiohead and QOTSA ?
Yeahhh and arcade fire!
Whyâd you stop making music?
I just wanted to make an album for myself, and I did that and than wanted to move on after investing alot of time and energy on it in my 20s.
Alot of people donât get it, like why I didnât want to go all in on a music career once Iâd done the hard part alot other musicians struggle with (writing material, making demos and producing etc). I had some friends in the music industry that really wanted to form a band with me, take my demos then re-record some parts in a professional studio and then go and preform my music live. But I never wanted to preform it, live performance wasnât my strong suite, but the creative part was.
The best way I explain it is, similar how people want to travel in their 20s I wanted to do it for the creative experience rather than try and turn it into a career. And as much as writing music was liberating and euphoric, I also found it emotionally taxing⌠writing out all your thoughts and revisiting dark moments in your life.
Once I had done thatâŚI realised I didnât want to solely focus my energy on my thoughts and feelings anymore but focus on otherâsâŚso I became a Social Worker! Go figure huh.
I needed to go back to school and do my degree and start my career, I also started a family recently, so I havenât had the chance to pick it back up as a hobby .
But Iâd like to think sometime in the future Iâll get back to making music for fun casually, when Iâm not wrangling a baby! (and hopefully make her sibling in another year) Making music for me is just very time consuming, because I give it my all when writing and I obviously canât disappear into a room for a weekend and do nothing but write, record and produce, which is my creative process.
But I still listen to the album here and there! And gosh Iâm so glad I did it, I still pinch myself that I had entire album of material and I had realised the music to how I had envisioned the songs in my mind.
Abit of a story and rant I know, but I hope that answers your question @Doggatron
Man, I understand completely. I started just recording at home aswell. On an old Boss digital 12 track. I had to be talked into performing live with a band. I had zero interest in it. The creative process was all I was interested in. But I ended up enjoying live performances. But not as much as making songs and recording albums. Live stuff was always secondary.
I ended up making 9 or 10 cds/albums (purely for my own enjoymentâŚnever cared if anybody heard a single note) on that horrible old Boss recorder and only retired it this year after 20 plus years of use. Upgraded to a computer and Im slowly wrapping my head around DAWs, amp modeling etc.
OhâŚand mixing and masteringâŚ
And then I see absolute weirdos on here like @Maxx @BAAKKEERRRR and @mrjez mixing other peoples music for âfunâ. I consider myself to be a music nerd, but that my friends, is a level of music degeneracy not even I will dare venture downâŚ
Oh thatâs cool! What type of music do you like to make?
Yeah I was a pro tools guy from the start. And Iâd also use Reason, run it through pro tools for all the Synths, strings, horn sections etc Iâd score. But Iâd record live parts directly in pro tools, vocals and guitars mostly.
Id use drum machines or sequence the percussion myself. Although Iâm not a drummer, but mainly just wanted to capture a groove.
Itâs a absolutely thrill making music. And now talking about it! Iâm getting that itch alittle!
I make mostly heavy psych stoner rock blues stuff.
I think I mentioned it waaaay up thread, but the one Im doing at the moment Im going to get pressed on vinyl from Small Run. They do one off pressings with your own artwork for $115. Its a lathe cut pressing. But Ive found the 18 minutes per side very restrictive, as I like longer jammy songs. So ive had to be economical. 5 minutes is the longest track Ive got on it so far. If they did gatefold covers, Id do a double for sure and really stretch out. But ah well. I see it as a creative challenge.
I use drum loops. They dont all sound great, but some certainly do. Running Reaper at the moment. With Amplitube.
The Blitzers that have made their own home recordings should post a favourite track here.
No judgement⌠itâd just be interesting to listen to.
To hear what was possible from a home set up at different points in time.
Ha, Iâve never actually done that. I did go down the sampling and beat-making route for a time though, to see if I was any good at it as I wasnât very good at playing instruments. Turns out I wasnât good at that either.
I dont really have the ability. I have a really old youtube channel but all it had was recordings I did demoing guitar pedals.
I dont think Ive ever uploaded music anywhere.
Very cool my friend canât wait to see it!
BigpapaDoggatron bandâŚIâm in
Itâs a great idea in theory, but thereâll always be some loudmouth like smj/nataliedons/whatever-their-handle-is-currently whoâs done fark-all in their lives but will pipe up with âthatâs shiit⌠donât like itâ and all of a sudden itâs a free for all.
I mean, I make music for no-oneâs edification but my own, and I give absolutely zero farks who likes it or not, but others here might be a little more sensitive to criticism.
Did someone mention The Wombats?
Dunno, but did they mention Nightwish?
Nightwish are crap (these days)âŚso slag 'em all you want.
How about that Brad mob?
Whaddaya mean âthese daysâ?
WellâŚunlike Brad and The Wombats, Nightwish actually had a period of time were they released some great musicâŚ
BTW, howâs your 2024 album listening going?
Not great. Havenât found much of interest at all when it comes to new acts unfortunately. A few of my favourite acts have released albums this year - most of them are decent, but hardly career highpoints.
You?
Havenât heard or gone out of my way to listen to too much music this year.
However this one got me on the right day at least to remember. Itâs definitely not song for song great but I liked a few.
Baby Rose, badbadnotgood - slow burn.
