Vinyl LP's & 45's

Jerry Hahn. Moses. An old Japanese pressing from 1973. How does something 50 plus years old sound so good??

Records are the best.

It’s true. I continue to add to my cd collection at $5 a pop via op shops, markets etc which is good when I have to hear something, but it’s not the same. If only vinyl was half as affordable!

Have all of the likes for that one.
Gosh, prices were so much better pre-Covid.

Having said that…I’ve spotted a sealed copy of Paul Kelly’s double album Comedy for $55.
That seems…pretty reasonable to me, given inflation since 1991.
I feel like it would have been at least $25 at the time.

Edit: quick google - $25 in 1991 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $59.47 today

Seems kinda fair for a double

Yeah. Its gotten bad. I rarely purchase these days. But I’ve got a few in the mail this week. First time in a few months I think. Its such a shame. I used to buy at least a couple every fortnight before covid. Last few years that has changed drastically. The reality is, record prices have pretty much doubled, if not more since say 2019. And postage from say the states now is just bananas.

Example: there are a few websites/labels I used to by regularly off in the US. Delivery was usually no more than the cost of a record, which at the time was maybe 30 to 35 bucks tops. If I saved up for a good order of 5, 6 sometimes 7 records that 30ish buck spread out wasnt to bad really. Few bucks extra per record, deliverd to your door from the states. And the records were usually cheaper than they were over here. But now, those same websites its like $125 USD Delivery. And that can be for one record. Its all happened like the last 6 or so months. Dunno if it’s this tarrif business.

The positive side is, when I do buy records now it certainly locally. For the first time since I started internet purchasing, local businesses is the cheaper option.

I consider my self very lucky to have gotten into records when I was younger and now have a bit of a library to draw from.

I was actually thinking which thread to post in, so this works… there’s a good podcast I listen to called Caropop, done by a Chicagoan journalist named Mark ā– ā– ā– ā–  (haha, blocked, you can guess what his surname is). He loves vinyl, and music in general, and gets good guests on. I got a pleasant surprise to see his latest ep is an in depth interview with Paul Kelly. Well worth a listen. And worth following for sporadic eps about vinyl reissue series and the like.

Obviously does not include house prices.

Banger of an album personally.

I have several thoughts on that album.
I was extremely disappointed when I bought it as a teen. Extremely.
I like it more now, but…I still have issues with it and I’m still confused by it.

With the benefit of hindsight, all and sundry (band, producer, label) now agree that they just didn’t have enough songs, but felt pressure to have an album ready-to-go to capitalise on the success of the 3 x #1 singles. Hence, it’s padded out to buggery with skits, stick-flick audio and average-to-poor cover versions.
Had it been stripped back to the first 3 singles, the (awesome) title track, the cover of War and a handful of the better songs towards the end of the album (Only Star In Heaven, Krisco Kisses and Wish The Lads Were Here) it would have been an all-time classic.
As it turned out, it was your typical ā€œdouble album which should’ve been a single albumā€ā€¦ extreme highs amidst some very ordinary lows.

Thanks to a certain poster on here, I’ve gotten into a bit of Keith Jarrett in recent years, starting with 3xCD of Setting Standards, which I like alot. So, when I found myself in a Brisbane CBD vinyl outlet on the weekend and the first thing I saw was the Jarrett section, I took the plunge. The lesser known of these 2 is a journey into electronica with percussion, which he subsequently eschewed, but I quite liked it (2nd hand Japanese pressing). The second is his most acclaimed Koln concert (new). Just sooo beautiful to listen to, until it stuck 3 minutes from the end of the first side. Booo! Cannot see a blemish or mark on it at all. Cleaned it again, and the stylus, same thing. Just bad luck, I guess, and I’m sure they will replace it, but what a let-down.

Pt 2 - took said vinyl back to the shop and it played without a hitch on their turntable. Guy gave it a ā€˜vacuum’ clean anyway and said to let him know if I had further trouble. So I tried it again at home and stuck again just like the first time I played it. Have adjusted the weight on the tonearm up and down, which doesn’t make any difference. I suspect I have a stylus problem, and it does look a tiny bit bent, but this hasn’t happened with any other record. I’ll try taking out the VM540ML cartridge (an upgrade with maybe 500hrs on it) and replacing it with the original VM95E to see what happens. Frustrating…

I have an OMD 7ā€ which kept getting stuck in the groove, and some Japanese New Order 12ā€s where the needle kept bouncing out. I was this close to throwing them out. Cleaned them, adjusted the tone weight etc. I thought they were bad copies.

Later I had upgraded the stylus and thought, I wonder… turned out the better stylus could handle them all. Still, that’s not a step to make just for one record. Maybe return it and hunt down an older pressing?

Yeah, the stylus I’m using isn’t a cheap one at $280-300, but it might be cactus although still seemingly ok on other records.

The shop was helpful but might not be keen on a refund given no apparent fault in their test.

Pt 3 Reset the tonearm balance and tracking force, didn’t help. Changed back to the original cheap cartridge, reset the tonearm etc again, didn’t help. Running out of options, the only other thing I could adjust was the anti-skate, which I don’t think I’ve ever touched before but was theoretically too high at around 5. I learned that this should be set to same value as the tracking force, in this case 2, so I dialled it back to there. Didn’t fix it, but it seemed to be sticking a little less deeply than before, so I dialled it all the way back to 0. Finally, success, no sticking. Tried putting the anti-skate back to 1 but it didn’t like that, so 0 it is for this particular record. I will leave it there and see if I get any skating on other records. All up, it was a fairly frustrating but educational experience!

One of my mates had their one and only 7ā€ produced by Lobby Lloyd. He said it was very hard going keeping up with the dope consumption…:scream:
