Morning coffee with the brand new Hendrix Box Set.
Be still my beating heart…
The Bold as Love Sessions:
A five record set contains a newly remastered copy of Axis Bold as Love in stereo and one in mono done by Bernie Grundman, two records full of studio outtakes (which at least 85% of which is all unreleased) a record of a live gig from Stockholm 67 thats been out of print since the 80s plus a handfull of other live tracks.
The chores are done and the feet are up. “I’m Gonna Wave My Freak Flag High!”
How did you go? Has Bernie done a good job?
I wouldn’t say it’s a massive upgrade on what was already available, but having said that, from a sonic perspective Axis was already Jimis strongest studio album. Quite well recorded for a 4 track album.
Haven’t spun the mono yet. Getting stuck into the outtakes. Some jaw droppers so far.
I found this one second hand the other week. A 1997, USA, double album of Are You Experienced?
The cover is a bit worn but everything else is pristine.
v Spy v Spy played at our school social.
They were pretty friggin good ![]()
Big in Brazil, apparently!
I do like them a lot.
The full length One Of A Kind is great.
I feel like I could have played bass for them, too, so points for that.
Snowblind is a banger.
Maybe borrows a little from Boys Don’t Cry, but I’m gonna assume they didn’t know.
Back at ya…
Don’t know if it’s quite as good as your one… but it rocks out quite nicely, and Clarity of Mind is a belter!
I never partook, because I read they went Christian.
I should. I really like everything they’d done up til then.
I believe band relationships soured considerably over time. To the point where there has been rival versions of Spy Vs Spy at times… one run by Craig Bloxom (the original bass player and vocalist), the other run variously by the original guitarist (who has now passed away) and/or one of their several drummers. Bloxom now leads a band which plays reggae versions of their songs.
At one point, around ten-fifteen years ago, a Spys website was run by Bloxom and he put all their releases online to download at your leisure, which was… useful!
It’s kind of weird to me know that at the time, this album was as big in our clique as Slippery When Wet.
Edit: although not quite as big as Bad News.
In my hood, they were held right up there with Midnight Oil (probably by virtue them mining a similar musical seam, having similar politics, and sharing manager Gary Morris with the Oils). If anything, they were probably more like a little brother… Harry’s Reasons and AO Mod TV Vers were definitely given a lot of hang time by us back in the day though…
Fair point, but I was a teenager and I’d heard Stryper, so…
Later…the Newsboys went alright. I had time for them.
sigh
Their lead singer was Bill Cosby for men.
Great.
Colour me shocked.
Now that I think about it…I never had a problem with Peter Garrett, or U2, and I did stare at INXS’s Shine Like It Does very suspiciously…
It was just them. I heard that (and I honestly don’t even know if it was true, now) and just went yeah-nah.
Edit: Prince…
I don’t wanna keep bangin’ on about it, but the outtakes on the new Bold As Love Set are unbelievable.
Are they previously un-released songs or alternate takes on known songs?
(or a bit of both)
What are some of the titles?
