Welcome to Essendon - there might be more last list spots…

But you & I have no idea who the club’s looking at.

At all.

So Mr Ace, why are indigenous always proud ?

Can’t white bloke be proud or is pride only a sin for whiteys?

I didn’t write the article, best ask those who did.

But you are the Guru

Far from it. FWIW I’ve played a fair bit of sport with indigenous lads over the years and many have openly described themselves as proud members of whichever tribe, area.
For some reason yes I hardly ever hear a white person say similar, well apart from the Greeks who tend to let everyone know they are proud Greeks :joy:

Mine was a serious question dikkhead. Number of wives is a fact, nothing to be proud of.

Americans on the other hand love claiming to be [insert European ethnicity] despite being 5 generations deep into American culture and not being able to locate their ancestral homeland on a map.

Waterman IN

Indigenous people are proud of their heritage in spite of people using it to deride them or undermine their humanity.

I’m a fan of us looking at mature agers that dominate the WAFL. It’s a bloody good competition as it is coupled with the fact that they played a lot of footy last year.

That means that the right type from there is much more likely to play senior footy early in 2021.

I think that’s what you want from mature age recruits, afl readiness.

@Clone_Hirdy also loves us getting players from the WAFL. Especially ruckmen

Correct, anyone that keeps Draper from developing is A-OK by me!

Don’t mistake my question, young beni.

I see it in many writing and media, used as a descriptor perhaps and my question is why is it used with indigenous people and no-one else. You may be proud of your Dutch heritage but are you labeled with it.

Fair bit of pride in surviving attempted genocide, indoctrination and disease. Survival as well as culture and tradition is cause for pride. Not sure whiteys tend to reflect much on such things, more individual achievements and family goals, because we have that luxury. Plus our culture is a hotch potch of distraction.

‘Proud Indigenous’ sounds like an apology. An apology for being Indigenous.
Of course they have reason to be proud, as do others. But others are not usually labeled with the preceding ‘proud’, because it would sound odd…unless, of course, there was some stigma attached to the description. That is what I think Bacchus is referring to, and I agree.

I though benfti answered it accurately.

As a Dutch person your cultural and racial identity hasn’t been used as a weapon against you, to put you down and make you “less” of a human.

By declaring yourself to be a proud garawa man it’s a statement that he is not going to accept the societal expectations.

You know the ones. Alan McAllister or whatever his name was at Collingwood we’re only to happy to say it 25 years ago…

You can try and inflame some faux culture wars over this, but can I suggest you just don’t.
