Gotcha. Mine was really just a reflection, not specifically responding to BF who I thought was referring mainly to the use of the word in so many articles about indigenous players. Also forgot what thread I was in!
I would have thought identifying by people rather than region implied pride, and it’s in that context that I take it.
There are times when I find the use of the word proud a little odd, pride being something of a double edged sword, descriptively, but not in this case.
I hear what you are saying and my question was not meant to inflame anything. We have an indigenous daughter in law and hence two of our grand-kids are part of the Yolngu people. I never hear any of our family refer to themselves as proud, even though I know they are proud of their heritage and culture.
FWIW, I’ve never met anyone with Dutch heritage that hasn’t used the phrase "If you’re not Dutch, you’re not much’. I’ve worked with about a dozen dutch blokes over the years.
Did I just enter the politics thread by mistake?
It’s the ‘White people are racist & potential list spots’ thread.
Got a problem with that?
I see what your saying, and I think I understand the question. But that’s still why.
For 230 years Aboringinality was used to degrade aboriginal people. I have spent to much time with indigenous kids ashamed of their heritage to see anything other than empowering them to be proud of it is the way to rectify their low self image.

Ease up Saucyfella. I was about to ask if we’ve ever had a Dutch player before visions of my junior bluey with 18 on the back swam before my eyes. We’ve had a lot of boering players since, but I can’t think of an obvious oven-maker in recent years.
Surely we had a flying one once?
Sorry to derail, but when I was a kid the word went around school that Van Der Haar swallowed his tongue taking a forward somersault mark for Victoria.
That was just a myth, right?
Like KISS never, ever, taking their make-up off.
I remember that and it haunted me. I genuinely lived in fear of swallowing my tongue for a sustained period. Much like many of the women of America did of swallowing Gene’s tongue.

The Dutch…the people who gave us William of Orange (ask the Irish how much they love him) and the forebears of the people woh invented apartheid.
Fejo is a jet; in my mind he should have been AFL listed this year. But I probably go a year early on these lads. A year in the SANFL will do him the world of good
FWIW, I’ve never met anyone with Dutch heritage that hasn’t used the phrase "If you’re not Dutch, you’re not much’
This Dutch guy didn’t. But boomerang people are often lekker.
I’m Dutch and frankly I think that makes me superior.
I came to read the discussion on who might take the last list spots…what a waste of time.
Waterman, then save the spots for MSD
We could probably do with an Orange boy as well
I know someone who’s available
