Welcome to Essendon, Thurlow and Ambrose

■■■■ for short?

■■■■ falls short?

I recall looking at the record at a VFL game to see who a certain player was and seeing it was Ambrose. I can't recall the context of that, but given I never focussed on stuff ups and only tended to look when I was impressed by something I'm certainly not disappointed on that front.

Other than that, I know nothing about either of them.

And sack Dodoro.

Well, we got a tall aggressive player in Ambrose

Just shows how incompetent our list management is. He could have gone to our Rookie B list and we could have got Heppel as well.

I’m a bit worried by that growth on his wrist, shades of Scotty’s elbow

Not vanilla enough.

Not a whole heap of info about Thurlow floating around but below are some of the comments of a couple of the better respected draft watchers over at BF for what they are worth.

From 2011: (His draft year):

Knightmare- Thurlow was surprisingly good in the ruck. But undersized so question of position at AFL level. Deserves consideration none the less.

Quigley- Thurlow has great size and did well for Qld this year at the Champs but his athleticism concerns me. I think his best chance is that someone takes him as a rookie KP/ruck project.

Snoop Dog- Tall fwd who impressed a bit during champs and some good judges north would definitely have him going but I just have not seen him play enough.

From 2013:

Knightmare- Thurlow is a tall who can play forward or ruck. He‘s a couple of years older and his body has matured well. Very strong mark overhead. Competitive in the ruck. Finds plenty of it around the ground.

Snoop Dog- I am a bit unsure on Thurlow but what swings it for me was his performance vs SA in the under 22 game. Saw some vision of it and he has a wonderful ability to take big contested grabs. At junior level he was competitive and around the mark and he has gone well in the local league demonstrating ability in ruck and fwd. Good kick but he is 20 and that may go against him given how blokes like Lobb and Brown are going.

Shouldn't these welcome threads be in the Dustin Fletcher Hanger? We don't want them deleted when this section closes.

Thurlow reminds me a lot of Bellchambers, both were rookies and big body players like the look of him.

Don't they just amalgamate this back into the hangar?

Ambrose goes to Essendon via rookie draft

PATRICK Ambrose was on the phone with Essendon VFL teammate Zac O'Brien when the AFL rookie draft got underway this morning.

"Zac said to me, 'Imagine if we both got drafted','' Old Xaverians forward Ambrose related.

Within a few minutes they did.

Brisbane took O'Brien with pick 23. And the Bombers claimed Ambrose, 22, with selection 26.

"It was unbelievable the way it worked out,'' Ambrose said an hour after the draft.

"I'm just on my way to the club now. Still amazed, really. I'm pretty thrilled. It's a dream come true.''

Ambrose had been training with Essendon and the club let him know he was in its thoughts. "But I had no great expectations that it would actually happen,'' he said.

"I knew I was a bit of a chance - I'd had a few meetings with them - but there were so many players trying to make it on. I'm one of the lucky ones I guess.''

About 100 congratulatory text messages told him as much.

Ambrose played his junior football at the Ashburton Redbacks and for his school, Xavier College.

He had a season with Coburg in the VFL before linking with Old Xavs.

Along with his brother Murphy he joined Essendon's VFL team this year, playing seven matches late in the season. Significantly, the 193cm right-footer saved his best performance for the elimination final against Werribee.

Bombers general manager Matty Little said Ambrose had stand-out qualities that would serve him well in his bid to become an AFL player.

"He's an extremely hard worker and he's athletically gifted,'' Little said. "For a bloke of his height to be able to run like he can, I reckon he's going to do some special things. He's suited to that third tall role, let him get up the ground and use his tank. He's got brilliant speed as well. I think he's going to be a very handy replacement for Stu Crameri.''

Ambrose is studying environmental management at Deakin University and is a bartender at the Skinny Dog Hotel in Kew.

He's entitled to pour himself a drink when he's next behind the jump.

Are they on the main list or rookies?

both got last name first names.

think about it.

Alll they had to write is that he worked in a Maryborough hardware store then it could have been the same article written about Stu Crameri at the time when he was drafted.

stu went to xavier and is studying enviro science?....wow great coincidence

Bellchambers was never a Rookie.

Obscure Richard Ambrose referece? I remember him from the early 90s. Looked like he could play a bit too as a key tall, though I don't remember him ever cracking a senior game. He may have played a few at Sydney though.
