What needs changing at this club?

And is now dead…probably from the sustained media bullshit / pressure destroying his hard built reputation to sell more newspapers

Reading the documents. Threatening Bails with the sack if he won too many games is disgraceful.

Couldn’t have said it much better. Every one of the points…

Need more ■■■■ in the club across the board. Less conservative, less inclined to be the nice guys, more ruthless.

That applies to the list too, and especially when it comes to team selection. Stop rewarding the old hands who aren’t getting the job done and start promoting on merit. Be ■■■■■■■ bold for a change. Make it a mission statement.

Obviously there needs to be a change in the coaching set-up - for a start that’s foreign to them. Secondly, it’s two years running now we’ve run off the road and it aint all the players fault. They’re confused and second-guessing everything they do and the results are clear. At the very least it’s a shocking failure of communication - a clear requirement of being a coach - but it runs deeper tha that, I think.

Thirdly, stop blaming the ■■■■■■■ saga. Stop blaming anything. Take responsibility. Do something. Do it hard, no prisoners.

I actually think this can be fixed relatively easily if the right decisions are made. The list is in good shape and building towards where we want to get to - problem is we keep tripping over our own feet.

I wonder if somebody has threatened worsfold the same way this season

There is definitely an issue with leadership at the club and the lack of direction coming from the leadership group. The young players in the team are feeling it and talking about it

Talking about it?

My five cents worth…

  1. James Kelly, Jobe Watson and Brendan Goddard were in the Elimination Final side 25 games ago. They’re not there. That is close to 900 games experience gone, and most of our finals experience (in Kelly and Goddard) gone too. HUGE leadership void. Stringer, Smith, Shiel, Saad - not natural leaders.

  2. Assistant coaching panel needs a complete clear out. It’s tired - its ideas and structures are tired. I read a great article by Rocket Eade this week (somewhere) that discussed game styles and how various teams are evolving and showing flexibility, especially with the 6-6-6 set up. He mentioned we play a game plan that is easy to play against, even by the ‘lower sides’ and lacks flexibility and does not play to our strengths which is rebound from D50, spread in the mid, and pressure in the F50.

ah sounds like the nutcracker is back………………………………………

Since I totally refuse to watch the second half of the abomination that is watching this team walk around for 30 minutes at a time.

I am going to give my thoughts on the football club as a whole and where we are at right now.

Starting with the board.

I don’t know, how much of an input do they even get in terms of coaching, player or general staffing appointments anymore? Off-field we seem to be a decently well ran club who continue to make profit and expand our brand exposure.

100% of our issues come on-field which in essence is the sole purpose the club exists in the first place.

For 15 years we have been a total basket case apart from about a 12 week period in 2012 where a group of players and coach rallied together with their backs against the wall who had something to prove and the outlet they chose to express their anger and frustration through was on-field performance.

Barring that aberration the highest Essendon has finished over the past 15 seasons is 7th and they have continued on to lose in the first week of finals.

The first issue has always been coaching. We have not had one coach since Sheedy who has had the players buy in and be a stable figure at the helm. The one we did have was our golden child of the past 2 decades who loved and adored the club and its fans, who was the epitome of what the club had strived to be since it was founded.

He ended up being made a scapegoat by the club and the AFL world which effected him so badly he lost all passion for the game and attempted to take his own life.

Except for this one coaching appointment, all the rest have been total failures that have ended up sending the club backwards instead of forwards. In a day and age where football changes rapidly, coaches have been appointed with either a lack of experience/credentials and/or a total lack of tactical nous or game-day awareness. (This is excluding the caretaker coaches who have not been in charge long enough to make a mark).

The recruiting/list management department.

This has been woeful for many years up until recently and even now has areas for concern. There has always been a severe lack of list turnover under Dordoro with average and poor players being recruited and/or being retained for far too long when their output and talent level is not up to the standard required.

Think David Myers, Mark Baguley, Ben McNiece, Jake Long etc.

The trading up until about 3 years ago has been nothing short of a disgrace and is still something we need to get a lot better at, especially at trading of players away from our club. Our inactivity in terms of trading players away and the fact that no clubs want any of our fringe 22 or depth players says everything you need to know about the overrating internally and as a fan base of our players over the years.

The medical department. Under Crowe has been nothing short of shambolic and something that those ITK on this forum have eluded to manyatime. The team has always started the year poorly and barring last year, has limped into the back half of the season and looks as if players simply cannot get to the level required in order to run out 22 games let alone play extra by way of finals. This has been a constant throughout our past 15 years but in particular under Crowe.

The coaching staff as a whole is far too big with roles and positions created for the sake of it ie Luke Ball.

And finally, player performance and constant ineptitude shown by players at AFL level has been dismissed and ignored and has resulted in players doing the same thing over and over again without punishment and being rewarded with a game the following week.

Zaharakis, Hurley, McNiece, Langford, Myers, Baguley, Gleeson etc the list goes on and that is just who has been rewarded games this year despite constant poor performance and ineptitude shown throughout extended periods of games. Over the past 15 years, we have been a laughing stock in terms of on-field performance because there are no standards or high expectations set for players to meet in order to continue to play football games.

The whole club and list needs a clear out which is the bottom line, it has been a disgrace for 15 years and yet here we are again needing to hit the reset button on a list that’s maximum potential is pathetic and patchy football that can sometimes scrape into 7th-8th and get kicked out of finals in the first round.

Worsfold, Crowe and Dodoro all need to go along with a serious cleanout of around 10 players off the list.

But, we all know that this will not happen and the club will continue in the same cycle and we will all be stupid enough to continue to buy memberships and tickets to games and be rewarded with the same old lip service and on-field performance that we have been for the past 15 years.
