Where to get shallow shelving?

So it seems that Ikea’s idea of a shallow shelf is 28cm. Most of my paperbacks check in around 15cm, though I do have a few that might be nearer to 20cm.

I don’t want shelves that take up an extra 10 or 15cm of my room space. Does anyone know where I can get shelves that are closer to 20cm in depth? Ideally width could be 30cm, 40cm or 80cm, and height anythiung from 100cm to 280cm.

TIA

Make it yourself, or but them in a box under your bed.

Get them custom made.

For a loooong time I did exactly that. Then I figured out that a can was exactly the right height for cd shelves, and a 600ml bottle was a great height for dvds and books. But now I have a toddler I don’t think I should be doing that sort of thing anymore.

Thanks for the help people! I guess I will have to do something myself. I just think it’s really weird that there seems to be no-one who will sell 18cm deep book cases. Do most people not care about not seeing the spine of their books whne they’re put away…?

I did a check after your post, & found Officeworks (cheap … on spec) & others the same … 280 mm, My guess is that for bulk production, if they had one at 200, they would still need one at 280, but essentially, a 280 can do all that a 200 does, as well as what a 280 will do, so one replaces the need to create ship and stock two sets/sizes of shelves.

If it’s just the depth that’s the drama, & not how far it sits out from the wall, you could cut and insert something into the back to reduce it, say some polystyrene, or a house brick on its edge (approx 80 mm), or anything really, that means you could have larger books or things, and then p/backs would sit out at the same level where the bulking was.

As a crazy monk-looking tripper told me at a rave many years ago… Shallow shelving doesn’t work.

Yeah, shallow means unstable. Need fixing if high.

When I lived on Gold Coast and had no money I was left in a quandary one night after being sent home from my gfs place when I realised I had no bed.

After apologizing for what if done I swore to myself I’d do something about it just in case I ever got kicked out again.

I bought a thin foam queen mattress from an op shop and borrowed roughly between 16 to 20 milk crates from behind various business locations on the strip. Hey presto. It was actually pretty comfortable. I think the smell of old milk actually counteracted my socks.

You built a girlfriend out of milk cates? What did you call her?

Jugs?

Stacked?

Not sure what your maximum is, but Ikea do have some that are 24cm deep. They are not clearly visible on the first search page. I went back and checked and when you click in, lines like the finnby & gersby would work.

We looked there recently for some bookshelves/general storage and I wanted things as narrow as possible due to some awkward walkway areas where the furniture was to go. Needless to say I lost and the Mrs got her way, we ended up with small kallax items that she can move around as needed & rearrange when she feels like a change.

You could try something like this, it is a bit expensive compared to Ikea:

It’s all budget & style dependant of course. And as others have mentioned it will more likely mean drilling to secure it, especially if you have little ones.

I discovered that the secret is to search for CD storage instead of bookshelves. http://www.selby.com.au/brackets-and-wall-mounts/dvd-cd-storage.html
