Draper is more of a cult hero type than a match winning player.
But thatās never existed at essendon.
I think it is Jake Stringer.
Loves a KFC franchise.
- We just need to make every year a contract year.
Our high performance department made short work of himā¦Now look at him!!!
Draper is an off-season franchise player.
Spot on, kicking goals in business and property.
We donāt have one.
We havenāt had a marque player since Jobe.
Archie Perkins

Tippa was our franchise player. Always bobbed up with freakish goals or got up the ground to get key possessions. Look at him feature here in getting us over the line in 2019
Notable Hooksy with clutch moments too.
Stringer at top form/fitness fits.
Should be 2MP, but heās too soft.
A fair amount of confusion here on what a franchise player is
Fwiw I say its someone people go to a game to see, whether they support that team or not
MJ
Kobe
LeBron
Ronaldo
Messi
Maradona
Those types of names are franchise players
Nobody is gonna tell me that even half the teams in the AFL have one, Buddy the only one in recent times
I agree with @Suspended
I also see a franchise player as someone that can win a game off his own boot, regularly. Not because he has a mullet or has a name that ryhmes with a measurement of height.
Do we have a player that people will talk about in 20 years? Tippa maybe. Itās been a while since weāve genuinely had a player like that. Lloyd is likely the most recent. Perhaps Watson.
Our current list is very forgettable.
Walla was much-loved and had a song written about him, he was the franchise player for a few years there for sure.
Possibly Daniher as well if heād stayed.
The Answer to the title isā¦
Jimmy Stewart
Will peak in his 30ās !
As others have said, it used to be AMT, but now the closest to it is Merrettā¦
OR, on present form, Kyle Langford.
Walla I can handle being the closest to it we have had for a long long time
Daniher no way not even close
Cupboard is bareā¦ā¦
The concept of a franchise player is inherently flawed in a game played by 18 players on a round as big as an AFL ground.
Then you have listed guys that donāt meet your own defined criteria against a number of clubs. So obviously the criteria you meet arenāt met for a number of clubs who havenāt played in big finals recently.
Essendon have a number of players that are at least comparable to the Nick Larkey, Jai Newcombe types.
Iād think opposition supporters would probably imagine Jake Stringer above those types (if not right now)
Anyway. Conceptually, guys that Essendon that could make their name by making meaningful contribution to winning a big final that then cements their position Iād add Ridley, Martin, Langford to the more usually recognised Merrett, Parish and Wright.
