Are you you too good for the emergency lane on the tulla fwy right before the exit to the airport like us regular folk?
There is a history of the club with a few facts that are not in dispute
Cain doomed Waverley by refusing to allow PT link, it was all about the MCG
Mrs Fox did that once and cops wrote her a ticket.
Around 2005 EFC we’re still trying to redevelop Windy Hill.
The Bowls club was too hard to move.
We tried to keep the Cookson stand and gym functional during an upgrade which would have moved the EDFL umpires and players to that area freeing up other spaces.
It was far too risky given Cookson was full of asbestos.
Then they built the gym so that the Cookson stand could be demolished.
It was always build something to move out something else so we could make the indoor facilities for the club. This meant as the football department at other clubs grew, we struggled for space at Windy Hill. And because we were trying to constantly build to move something out of the way, it took too long to allow for that expansion.
For memory, we tried to build a new Bowls club with far better facilities in another area so we could expand into that area. Bowls club said no. They wouldn’t lose a day. Just woke day be in the old, then shift to the new the next day. They didn’t want it.
Moving to Tullamarine was necessary because there is still plenty of space for expansion. Space that was not available at Windy Hill.
Is it soulless? Yes. The soulless mess was going on when Hird decided to lock out the fans from watching training sessions. It got worse because of the ■■■■ stain club performance we’ve dealt for the last two decades. Not the facility.
If anything, it would have been great to be somewhere nearer to the city. Unfortunately, Essendon Airport was not an option because the land was more valuable as retail use and hotels rather than a football club that is pretty much inactive for the majority of the working week.
Wrong. Been open for ages now. Still souless and stale as ■■■■.
Has been doing so for 150 years.
Because we’re playing like ■■■■.
It wouldn’t be so soulless if we won a premiership in the last decade and had the hope of a next one around the corner.
Sort of like what we had from the mid eighties to 2005.
Once the game became more marketable and less of a pastime and more professional, we had to move on.
All the other clubs saw it coming. As per Hawthorn, Collingwood, Melbourne, StKilda, etc. we waited until 2015 to shift. Mainly because Windy Hill was too restrictive with space and the game was growing more rapidly than the space they had there.
No wonder he looks cooked
A League champions didn’t mind it.
All the Victorian politics and the status of Princes Park as second only to the MCG.
Goes back to the 1956 Olympics. Under the Libs, Princes Park was to be the main venue. John Cain senior came to power, it was the MCG ( and a lot cheaper, other venues nearby).
Elliott spent much of his time hitting on Waverley, pushing for more Government money to be spent on Princes Park.
Waverley and Fark Carlton Park are both dumps. I wasn’t sad to see Waverley get bulldozed but even though I hate FC Park I do wonder if Melbourne does need another venue that is AFL standard. I don’t know how much it would cost but teams like Norf could play at a much smaller venue and as we are going to see this year the AFLW will need venues for the finals in all likelihood
When Carlton was thwarted , Collins of Carlton made a killing on his Docklands venture
Waverley was selected as the fastest growing demographic, land at good price, it was also predicated on PT, the outer east of Melbourne had been neglected.
The sale of Waverley was a bonanza for the AFL and enabled higher payments to players, making it fully professional.
Well done by the Waverley Trustees, it served its purpose.
Agreed its sale was profitable but I hated going out there and wasn’t sad it was bulldozed.
Melbourne does need another decent ground it’s just a matter of starting from scratch or pouring money into a existing ground. I hate FC Park but it’s location is great and would be ideal but I have no idea how much money is needed to get it up to scratch
Princes Park a prime venue for interschool sport comps. It was never a venue exclusively run by FC, part of metro parks for public use.
Melbourne needs another football venue though so if FC Park is unable to be upgraded then somewhere else needs to be found. Ideally needs to be able to hold 25-30k
Haven’t been in to the pokies side but the under cover bowlo is great for a beer. The selection of beers could be better, but it’s reasonable enough.
Any chance we move back?
I wonder if there’s space over near the hockey on the other side of the zoo that could be developed with an agreement to level FC park and return it to park land as the trade off?

Any chance we move back?
No chance
No.
