Personally I was disgusted… Don’t get me started on AFL players standing the mark either. They should give helpful advice about the wind.
That's a poor equation YT.
There are on aggregate 200 marks per AFL game. Possibly more and some more important than others. Even a kick from fifty metres after the siren for a win is not in the same realm. The ball is is still basically in play and the man on the mark entitled to add his two pennys.
Penalties in a KO world cup game, after 120 minutes of contested opportunity which has ceded play with a vacant half field, changing keepers and rotating strikers when each knows their role... is just unnecessary. It the crowds job.
It is not the same as a wicket-keeper sledging a batsman at the crease, or a back's comment in a rolling scrum in rugby. That is part of the game.
Time has ceased and perfunctory duties just have to take their course.
It is the time to play your role and hence the exponential reference above. When does 'play' cross the line in these situations and why do you have to allow for players to get so close to that line to adjudicate between gamesmanship and sportsmanship when the alternative is easy. Take your shot or defend the goals.
Unless you believe the end justifies the means which is what this is all about. And that is ugly in sport. Probably epitomizes where i am coming from.
What happened to winning well?
Wow, like seriously wow, its the world cup, you do anything within the rules to win. If the dutch win it, krul will be a national hero for those saves, no one will care that it was ugly. Caring about 'winning well' its an absolute farce, its like those fools saying when we grind out wins in football they'd rather a loss, bull farking ■■■■. Take the win anyday, if some aussie bloke did what krul did, we'd be trying to get him a vic cross, statue at the g,and title him australian of the year.

If I got paid millions of dollars to kick a ball into a net, I wouldn't give a toss what some bloke wearing gloves said to me.
Say something back to him - tell him you're going to kick it left and when he dives right give him the bird.
I must have missed something, what's the issue???
People caught up on 'the ends justify the means' and thinking krul ruined the game by his antics in the shootout.
Not quite so. No taint. Just sayin he didn't need to do it.
Ok, and when strikers just run up and kck it rather than try to fake out the goalie, it'll be a valid point.
Ronnie has said that Timmies goal should be goal of the tournament
Wow, it was my daughter's 1st birthday yesterday so I've paid absolutely zero attention to the World Cup since the quarter finals finished.
Imagine my surprise today to find out some sort of stink had been kicked up about Krul's antics in the penalty shootout.
Absolutely ridiculous.
People complain about sports being sanatised and sports people speaking in cliches but the moment one of them does something slightly out of the ordinary they are vilified.
For mine I think it was absolutely amazing that he was able to sit there for 120 minutes having no role in the game whatsoever, apart from knowing that if it got to a penalty shootout, and they still had a sub left, he might then come on to take over for the shootout.
He had obviously studied the Costa Rican penalty takers extensively he knew which way all 5 were going to go and got a hand to two of them. Some of those might have been lucky guesses, but I don't buy that a goalkeeper and guess the right way 5 times in the one shootout.
Would the result of the shootout changed if he just stood there and didn't say anything. Who knows? Maybe, maybe not? Who cares? He got inside the head of the Costa Ricans penalty teams and he made two saves and his team advances to the World Cup semis, doubt he gives two craps if some believe he lacks class.
Ok, so I watched the replay just now. How is it any different to when when MJ told Karl Malone in Game 1 of the NBA championships "The mailman doesn't deliver on sundays"? (Malone missed both FTs BTW)

Why are you trying to marry another poor aspect of the game which is just not related? And frankly i don't like the striker stuttering up to the kick either but it has naught to do with a keeper mouthing off at a striker beforehand.
Apples and oranges.
I could equally add diving or simulation or any event beggaring a free/penalty rampant in soccer which is not related to a keeper saving a penalty. But it is not part of the action sponsoring this.
All i have said is that Krul, need not have gamely got in the strikers face.
My concern, what i don't like about it, is that it could lead to uglier things that than what we saw. If the lassitudes permit that, by extension every keeper could, really should give a mouthful to every striker at every penalty!!
I really don't mind! I prefer contact sports anyhow. At least then the issue is fixed.
So when an afl player gets a goal, and screams in a persons face is that gamely? When fletch pretends to throw his mouthguard is that gamely?
I honestly don't get your point, gamely is a farce, as long as its within the rules, means justify the ends.
Just popped in to say Hup Holland!

You are reaching.
But i am done on topic. This thread does not need to spiral this way.
Looking forward to the semis.

Krauts for me 2
Can't stand that cheat robben or the flopping south American's who get 79 fouls a game.
I want the Dutch to win. Go Dutch!
