Your Death Row Match

I really enjoyed the rollercoaster of emotions of the comeback game.

2000 Qualifying final v North. Clinical football, 200 points in a final.

I have the inside story on that one. (And have told it on Blitz before).

R Walls tried to intimidate the umpires before the game, getting all his players to gather around and over them in an intimidating way.

He said something like “We hope you will give us a few favourable free kicks out there today”

The reply was “We always try to be fair, but we are human, so who knows what will happen. Look at your captain there - he always tries his best but he is human too. He could line up for an important shot at goal but completely miss it. So who knows what will happen?”

This was told to me by a very reputable witness who had it first hand from the umpire concerned and he told it to me on the Monday after that game.

This just goes to show how important is psychology to AFL players, and is a great example of how FCFC shot themselves in the foot.

Always good to hear about the bearded clam making an ■■■■ of himself. I bet Sheeds had a quiet chuckle to himself over a Shiraz that night even though we didn’t win.

If I was on death row I think I’d opt to watch the 1996 or 1999 Preliminary Finals, then second choice the 1983 GF, and third choice virtually any Essendon final since 2001.

Any would make drawing one’s terminal breath something to look forward to!

There’s method in that madness.

1962 Grand Final. Led by Captain Jack Clarke, with Geoff Leek, who lived behind our next door neighbour, the vice captain who played his last game in that match. l have managed to watch one quarter of it since the footy replay was on, and clearly remember Davis and Epis standing in towels and being interviewed after the win.

Round 23 vs Carlton, 2016. Just so sweet after an awful year, to smash fark Carlton like that.
