#1 Andy McGrath - from April 2022

you didn’t clarify what you stated, you merely regurgitated the same assumption.

which shows you have no evidence he’s been under developed cos you have know knowledge of how he was developed, other than like the rest of us, with an outside view.

We should have taken Oliver not Parish!!!

the word elite in this sport has gone to ■■■■ cos of a bunch of moneyball nerds who went out and put a value to stats on a stats sheet in column a b and c.

to avoid the essendon bias on here i’ll pose a different example
where would people rate oliver in a hird/voss/buckley debate ?

I wouldn’t have even remotely near close enough to be allowed to shine their boots, let alone in a discussion about elite.

yet in todays game he’s elite, despite not being able to hit the side of a barn by foot, cos on an excel stat sheet, as long as he gets the ball out first, and vaguely gets it near people down the ground, as long as they do their job and have a shot, we can then congratulate oliver for being elite cos he gets involved in chains of play.

I’d love it if the afl banned stats collating, it’s a garbage endeavor to create the illusion players are what they are not.

4th. Who do you think is the best player in the AFL right now and how do they compare to Hird/Voss/Buckley?

Lol Clayton Oliver is a gun. Better player than Jobe ever was.

Jobe Watson was a champion player

220 games
Brownlow Medal
Essendon captain 2010-2016
2× All-Australian team
3× Crichton Medal
AFLPA best captain award

Clayton Oliver is also a champion player

Comparing them or rating them against each other is nonsense.

Dodoro should have offered Melbourne or picks 5 and 6 in 2015 draft and secured Oliver at 4, as he would have been the ideal replacement for Jobe.

Why?

People saying Oliver is judged on his stats. I think he’s a better player than watson, who many consider a champion player.

Thanks for citing Waston’s credentials.

What you actually said is the Oliver is a better player than Watson ever was .

What is your criteria? In my view, if you picked the best game both ever played then you would find that Jobe won the match for the Bombers while Oliver was not the difference between both teams. Both are/were very consistent players and both deserve our applause.

I would argue the Melbourne has handled Oliver better than the Bombers did Jobe. Oliver has played with a better mid-field than Jobe ever did, and Jobe was continually played even though he had a bung shoulder. Not taking any credit away from Oliver, as if there was any Melbourne player we could have, he would be my first choice.

Thank you for confirming my perspective.

Fark !

Only if your perspective is that Jobe played better games than Oliver ever has.

Should’ve drafted Oliver instead of Jobe

It’s all Tim Watson’s fault. Should have fathered Clayton Oliver.

Dont know why Dodoro didnt draft Oliver when he was 14. Was fairly obvious back then that he was going to become a highly decorated all-australian, premiership winning player. Another blunder!

Actually they are highly comparable, both play the same position, in similar ways.

So what do you compare ? Disposals, tackles etc Brownlow votes etc.

It is like if you compare two full forwards, Jack Riewoldt from 2012 and Charlie Curnow in 2022. Both kicked nearly the same amount of goals, so who is the better player ?

I have always reckoned it is very difficult to compare players because it depends on the criteria you choose.

Over the past 60 years, the best player I have ever watched is Peter Hudson, who would probably not be in most peoples top ten.

Al I have been discussing with young Alex, is his comment that Oliver is better. Impossible to be definitive.

Statistics and awards mostly. It can be harder to compare players who werent at there best at the same time because the game changes. Its especially difficult to compare players now to players before all the modern statistics were recorded. We dont have score involvements or many other stats for 2012 for example. Plus a lot of it just comes down to opinion really. I think Oliver and Watson are about even atm but Oliver is in his prime and will likely go past him soon. I think people are generally harsher on current players and overrate past players.

I don’t really want to go around in circles with you. It’s my opinion, take it or feel free to leave it.

As the saying goes, opinions are like @rseholes, everyone has them.
