#1 Andy McGrath - from April 2022

He would be picked quickly ESPECIALLY in teams that have quality ball users to cover his deficiencies

HA - what a joke.

Good as a small lockdown… But he can’t kick under any sort of pressure. He may lock down his direct opponent… But his poor decision making and disposal leads to goals from one of his teammates direct opponents.

Btw I agree we have nobody else who can lock a small. Says a lot about where the list is at.

He’d be a much better player if he stopped trying to be the distributor from half back.

But then it’s as much the fault of the blokes handing it to him (or more likely, the coach instructing them to do so).

Bloke can seriously defend.

I don’t think it’s a debate he’s a good lock down back pocket, people are just ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  we ended up with a back pocket with a pick 1.

He is the least of our problems. We all know his weaknesses and his strengths which are unlikely to change in the future.

McGrath slaughtered Hill in '23.

Been playing well.
Happy with him playing like this as a back pocket for the next seven years.

Edit: let’s not be cross at people disappointed that we drafted an okay back pocket with our #1 pick though.

That’s fair.

If trade him for Idun #61 before you could blink.
Yikes. We drafted Gown at #60.
THANKS DODORO!

It’s a shame he loses composure out of nowhere- and ends up killing the game.

He just doesn’t seem to be able to get that trait out of his game. It’s a damn shame, and so frustrating to watch.

I know he was doing the job on Hill, why didn’t they see it was Elliott that was fast winning the game and make the switch?

I’ve felt McGrath has done his defensive job well this year. He never going to be the brilliantly poised rebounder, but he appears to be focused on killing his opponent. At least that’s a good focus to have for a defensive minded back on a dangerous small forward.

Just keep him as a tight 1on1 player.
We would be a much better team if he sticks to getting 15 touches a game rather than 25.

I think McGrath would win the fan base over if he did the following

  • relinquish the VC role
  • average 10 possessions a game
  • play purely as a lock down defender
  • never take a kickout

I thought he was pretty good this week.

Kept Hill quiet.

Yeah he had one visible mistake but he certainly wasn’t alone there.

Not controversial. I had him second best on (iirc). He was very good. It is what it is…

Bobby hill won the NS, Kai Lohmann was close to best on last year. Small forwards are incredibly damaging and without somebody like McGrath who can take them out and even run off them you will struggle to win a final let alone a GF.

Yes many hate him because he was pick 1, most don’t value his leadership. But what he has is something that is very important to a side, and he does it every week without reward.

People need to stop tying his pick value to what he is, he will never be that midfielder everybody wanted. But he is probably the best small defender in the game. And that is nothing to snooze at.

I don’t think anyone is wanting him to be a midfielder - that’s never being the issue.

I think we all get frustrated because he wants to play the play maker running HB role - which he is just not good at, at all.

He needs to be the most dour small defender in the league and that is the only role he can play and he can play it as good as anyone.

Plus he needs to give up the VC role.

Why?

If he doesn’t take the game on against WC, we don’t win.

Great post. The commentary around McGrath is ridiculous.
