#1 Andy McGrath - from April 2022

Wouldn’t hold ya breath.

Couldn’t have been more obvious that he should play defence than after the doggies praccy game where he was BOG and yet he hardly has.

Footy Shows talking about how McGrath should be playing on the wing.

That’s where he played most of Saturday.

I thought he looked the best he has all season in that position.

It’s where he’s played most of the year, and last year.

Next few years it’s going to be the same.

We win and he plays well - “allways should have been playing back good to see”

We loose -“send him back”

In reality he’s playing basically the same role each week.

If McGrath plays in the backline who does he replace?

Ie what’s everyone’s ideal back 6 from now they have seen the boys play?

Going forward, after this year, my back 7 would be:

Laverde Reid Hind
McGrath Ridley Redman/Kelly

We have Langford, Martin, Durham and maybe Cox as wing options. Potentially Davey although I suspect we may start him forward out of necessity.

Yeah but we play 6:6:6 at centre bounces

Are you saying Redman would drop back from the wing and we would play an extra behind the ball?

Nah just saying you basically always have one defender on the bench at any given time. That’s why I listed 7 defenders.

He will definitely be playing in the backline, when some of our players come back.

Good thing with McGrath playing back pocket is he can’t go backwards.

Seriously though looked great on Saturday night running through the backline. Definitely have missed that run since McKenna, Saad left and Hind being down on form.

Blitz’s preferred back 6-7 is all of:

McGrath
Reid
Ridley
Kelly
Heppell
Redman
Hind
Cox
Cutler
Laverde
Francis

With Stewart, BZT, Lord, McDonagh, Brand, etc as additional depth.

Not many have Heppell in a ‘preferred’ back 6/7 tbf

Our defence is our healthiest line and makes
me think McGrath should for the time being cover another role due to injuries.
Ridley and Laverde are available. Only need one of Stewart, Reid or Zerk. And I don’t think you can select more than 4 of McGrath, Heppell, Redman, Hind and Kelly to play in defence.

McGrath could move up to the wing to cover Langfords wing role but players like Durham, Cox and even Guelfi are probably better suited for the wing rather than the holes in the forward line due to injury. This leads me to think that just for now McGrath’s best role for the team would be up forward and applying all his defensive elements up there.

Ridley Laverde Reid
Heppell Redman Hind … Kelly

Durham Merrett Martin
Draper Parish Shiel … Caldwell Hobbs

McGrath Perkins Guelfi … Smith
Wright Francis Bryan
23rd - Cox

He sucked at wing in 2018 and 2019

So, except for the two that matter most.

You kinda missed some important ones like kicks, marks, tackles, contested possessions, inside 50’s & clearances. Basically all McGrath has on Clug stats wise is handballs & efficiency (handballs are naturally more efficient than kicks). If you just look at this year Clugg even has him covered for those as well. There’s no stats or objective observations that support McGrath over McLuggage.

4 goals straight on the weekend. McLuggage has been amazing this year. McGrath has been serviceable one match and horrendous in the rest.

This is the backline I want to see

B: Kelly. Reid. Laverde.
HB Redman. Ridley. Hind.

Both McGrath and Cutler interchanging with Hind and Redman.

Stewart forward.
