#1 Andy McGrath - from April 2022

It has to be remembered that when the decision to move McGrath into the middle occured we had one of the best HB lines in the comp with Saad and McKenna with Redman and Ridley coming through too and a terribly shallow midfield.

A move back to the HB line would be best for the team and for the individual himself because I think we lack leadership back there (sans Heppell who probs shouldn’t be there) and McGrath can be that general with Kelly and reddog his lieutenants.

This ranking seems about right although I think Reiwoldt is the best of the bunch by a smidgen over Hodge

He hasn’t been amazing. Wait until the finals when he matches up on Ed Langdon on a wing and gets torched defensively as he did last year.

Regardless of his best possie Im actually a bit down on Mcgrath now.
He has been pretty disappointing this year. Was really hoping he was going to take the next step like Parish did last year.

Bit of a shame, really.

I’ve been down on McGrath also but he’s still got plenty of value and improvement in him and the Mcluggage miss will be mitigated by Martin’s inclusion anyway.
And on Taranto he seems more a fwd than a mid and goes missing plenty too, it’s just that when the Giants are going well you don’t seem to notice, probably much like Shiel when he was there too.

Andrew McLeod played predominantly back half didn’t he? He would be an ideal player for Andy to model his game on.

A great game on the wing seems to have convinced everyone that he has found his position as a defender. What that game showed us IMO is that we have at least four better wing options than Cox.

Had a bad injury last year, which he seemed to struggle with agility and acceleration the first block of games. That looked remarkably better last week, hopefully as confidence in his body returns his game will improve as the season goes on.

What a player that man was, the silkiest of silk

Unbelievably good. Would have been even more highly rated had he played for a Victorian team.

Murphy said he ran his best metrics, 900m high intensity running, had his zip back etc

Good to hear, I’d missed that.

McGrath, Martin, Durham and ?

McGrath getting deep and popping through lines really made me question Cox too

Get out.

McGrath, HBF; Redman, wing.

Yep, yep, yep. Was my favourite non Essendon player when he was playing.

Saw an interview with him ages an ages ago, where he said his favourite player as a kid was Paul Vander Haar.

So not only a great player, he had good taste too. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m absolutely convinced that McGrath’s best position is HBF/BP.

I’m not at all sure that is the best position for him to play given the above.

It’s the Cale Hooker conundrum. His best position was KPD, but we really needed him to play forward.
