#1 Andy McGrath - from April 2022

when was this

Last quarter

Is this the kick? Gresham didn’t compete and the turnover was a goal. Wasn’t really a 2 on 1 though. McGrath should have hit the target but Gresh should have done better.

The Lual kick wasn’t that easy as he could have been equally covered by the Suns player near him.

The Lual kick is easy, just a simple chip over the top into a bit of space. Or hit the guy in the middle 20m away

But nope he goes for the hardest option, turns it over and costs us a goal which kills the game off

The game was dead at that point.

That’s the one. The Lual kick was very easy. Look at all the space he had to his right. All McGrath had to do was chip it over.

The decision and execution of what he actually did was as bad as you’ll see

Lol yes he did I watched the replay and I’m sure opposition coaches speak about it also

We still had a slight chance.

And even if the game was dead, it was still a terrible decision and a terrible kick by a leader

When even Humbert and Nickers aren’t getting around Pidge he must have had a bad one!!

It’s probably a directive. To go through the middle.

High risk, high reward. We cant play footy through there unfortunately. We don’t have the skill nor the defensive intent when things go bad.

I don’t think either choice was wrong.
The two in the middle would have been a directive option: hit one of them, the other then provides an overlap for a run straight at goal. I see teams like the Pies and Dawks do it all the time (skills sets to do it).
The Lual option would also have been a good one (provided there was no right behind him). Pidge could have run straight at him and chipped the ball over and Lual runs toward the 50.

Neither decision would have been wrong imo.
The problem was the skill to execute it. He had 3 free players and hit none of them.

Late in the game, 3 goals down or whatever it was.

Pulled the pin through the middle & it went wrong. Its directive.

Unfortunately we dont have the players Geelong did in 06-07 when it all clicked for them and that high risk style of footy made for a decade of dominance.

He needed to telegraph going in the middle and then pull the kick to Lual or vice versa. He left no one doubting where the ball was heading.

I was at the game, and I don’t really remember what happened on this play… so maybe I’d tuned out, or went to the gents at this point, or both. But from here, what I’d like to see McGrath to do is to run at the space between the defenders, give the handball and then the receiving player (I can’t tell who it is) has the ability to run past the centre and kick the ball deep in to F50,

Alternatively, he can receive the handball and continue to run at the defender positioned in the centre circle and create a 2 on 1 overlapping handball with the player immediately on his right.

I’d also like to see our ā€œtopmostā€ player (again, I can’t tell who it is) in this picture turn around and lead up to the wing - opening space at half forward, rather than filling it, and giving the defender in the centre something else to think about if we go laterally.

Then again, dafuq would I know.

Umpire filling out the gold Coast zone beautifully there. This is what Scott was talking about

What frustrates me about this picture is that it captures our whole game style, where nobody is running toward the kicker.

Only Lual is facing him, and even he’s flat footed

Maybe some of our turnovers are because we are trying to hit difficult angles, instead of hitting up a player, who then can dish off to a HBF running past. Remember when there used to be a position known as Centre half forward, who would come towards the ball?

i think its fine if you have actually run the ball forward in waves, which we dont, so its not

The game plan is to clog our forward line up . It’s a good point I didn’t see before.

I hate that most of our running is up and down, not a lot latterly or on the 45 creating pockets of space.

If Lual pushes latterly to the wing for a quick 3-4 steps, mcgrath chips and he can wheel and go towards the middle and has lots of runners inside and prob a couple leading up at him too.

Its not easy for 90% of our list :grinning:
