#1 - Andy McGrath - from April 2022

Needs to play within his own capabilities and should never take a kick out after a point, that roll should be left with Farrow, Johnson, Reid or Redman.

He should, however, be encouraged to take grass if he sees it. He is capable of breaking a line with his run when he wants to, and we could really use that instead of constant long kicks to contest.

Granted, he can make some odd decisions while doing that, but I’m fine with errors (by any player) when the intent is correct.

I doubt Blitz has forgotten the game he played last year as captain without Merrett in the side. Probably his best game for the club.

That’s all I’ve got for him hope-wise. Obviously I don’t want him injured but the silver lining of a Merrett hammy would be that we get a chance to see if McGrath can replicate that performance now that the circumstances would be like for like.

If he didn’t come through in that scenario, show him the door. Fair case to be made for showing him the door anyway.

the reality is there is only so much you can do on footy in a week.
all the main sessions, recovery.
Breath work & Visualisation are like 0-1% marginal gains

One thing that ginds my gears is skills and goal kicking.
After Caldwell not being able to hit a hand ball the other week, I would have made him take a footy with him the next month. Ben McKay is also a shocker by hand. Working on handball is probably less strenuous than going for a hit of golf.
Maybe have a Lous handball night for the 3 players who missed the most handballs that week.
And encourage all the forwards to do more goal kicking end of session.

He shouldn’t need Merrett to be out of the team to act like that.

Hes the captain of our footy club for Christ’s sake

One thing I ask is, it McGrath’s going on a run, the rest of the back 6 and a winger should fall back and defend the ground in anticipation of turnover.

So many times we are burnt by his plays. If the ball ends up in our 50 or a stoppage then yes push and press the ball into our third.

Put him in the middle as the defensive, cotchin style mid and eject parish from the best 22.

(Nguyen can play the lock down role on the oppo small forwards)

Totally fair point. If Merrett’s presence in the team is psyching him out then he mightn’t be captain material to begin with.

This is his week.

Should play on Kozzie wherever he goes.

McGrath plays best and is most selfless in a total shutdown role.

He shuts down Kozzie and that goes a long way to us being competitive.

This.

Why wouldn’t we go an old fashioned hard tag on him with McGrath? He’s the best player to do this.. can go with him (Maybe) in the centre bounce… and can def defend him up forward (maybe)

Wot? “def…maybe”???

I’d like to see this, if McGrath won this duel it would go along way to winning the game.

Would be a captains performance, I heard during the week that KP attended something like 37 ctr bounces last week, the most of all the Dee’s midfielders.

When did Kevin Peterson join the dees?

Per AFL player ratings, Andy is having his second worst year of his career.

If Andy plays on Pickett will probably be our best midfielder for the day.

Roberts ball watches

Durham gets sucked into the contest

Caldwell too slow outside the initial contest

McGrath is disciplined to do the job and might get himself back into form.

McGrath in the middle playing a defensive role is exactly what he should be in the team for. Perfect.

Just make McGrath go with best player each week no matter the position.

Funny, McGrath in the middle leads to one of our better performances. Who’d a thought?
