#1 - Andy McGrath - from April 2022

Lol - whoever said they wanted McGrath as captain

Since 2016 Andy has been inked in as a future captain.

So it came to pass in 2026. I bet right now it feels like taking the helm of the Titanic in the North Atlantic in April 1912.

I reckon it’s more that after becoming vice captain then it was like royalty.

Now the King and it doesn’t matter what a mess it is or becoming it’s still his birthright.

i was just about to say something similar. The hatred towards merrett can’t hide the fact this guy was always the worst possible person to take the reigns. was given to heppel mk 2, but closer to rock bottom than heppell ever got.

What % of #1 draft picks have become generational players?
Is McLuggage a generational player?

Plenty on here will happily pot McGrath but offer no viable alternative. Of our leadership group I don’t know if a single one of them would be better. Redman and Langford are flaky, Martin may never get back to the level he was at before, Fiorini had either barely joined or wasn’t here, so that leaves Duzz and Caldwell. Duzz I reckon is a bit quiet / reserved for the role and Calders has enough on his plate trying to get back to playing a reasonable level of football. So who should be captain then?

I reckon Duzz. He doesn’t take a backward step on field and he’ll find his voice. Reminds me so much of Paul Kelly, he was quiet and there were doubts on his leadership, but he grew into it perfectly.

Yeah if I was picking anyone it probably would be him, I feel Andy would be better with less of a load on him but what do we really know in the end

I don’t love Mgrath as captain but his on field performances have been fine this year.

He is a placeholder until one of the younger guys are ready. Durham, Robert’s, Sharp or a new head could pop up in 2/3 years time and be ready. It is what it is for a club so bereft of leaders.

A total indictment of the list management.

Tbf i think the general consensus was more a case of, well he’s probably our only option. There certainly wasn’t a resounding swell of support for how amazing he was going to be in advance of the fact.

Exactly how I saw it.

Unanimity cannot exist.

It was never unanimous and never will be no matter who is captain.

I think he has improved.
However, why has it taken this long?
He actually has the awareness of disposal importance.

Its been a slow burn for McGrath this year. He can and needs to play better.

McGrath just has a few issues in his game that he needs to work on that he just never does. Running too fast jiving around then getting caught or passing to a flat footed team mate under pressure is one of them. Not picking the simple kick as a pass is another.

He’s just another one of our senior players that people hate on. If we ever trade him because we are going to do another rebuild…. he’ll go to another club and be a good player and we’ll still argue about him, saying things like he wasn’t going to part of our next premiership anyway. Just like so many before him.

I believe it was the lack of development at the club that means his issues never got fixed and now they are permanent.
