#1 Andy McGrath - from April 2022

I dunno McGrath has had one or two real good seasons. Probably on par with myers career thus far

So Taranto was the midfield bull? In that case the same point applies. He doesn’t play in the midfield and GWS are about to let him go.

I agree though that I’d rather Taranto over McG

Well that’s my point reallly

Does anyone know why Mcgrath didn’t play in that under 18s allstar game that they had pre-draft ?

And one of those was organizing choir practice. Remember when that was one of the reasons in the big story put out for picking him #1?

As of 2022, agreed.
One would have to say that right now Guelfi is closer to elite than McGrath.
According to the AFL stats page, based on 2022 stats, Guelfi has more Above Average traits than McGrath. While Guelfi seems to be improving, McGrath seems to have stagnated this season.

Taranto attends 46% of GWS centre bounces. 2% less then Cogs and 5% less then Kelly. GWS runs so deep in the middle they have to share the midfield time around and Taranto gets less time in there then some of there other players but he definitely plays midfield.

I thought he did and he played back. I have some memory of him being on clug in the backline at some point but perhaps I’m recalling a metro v country game.

Regardless, clug was my man and I was very disappointed draft day.

I wouldn’t. At all.

Looks like all the top 4 (and probably number 6) will be 200 gamers.
Only three whiffs in the first 25.
That’s a good draft.

He didn’t play in that match due to injury

And mccluugage kicked 4. No way would anyone predict where Bolton would end up based on that game

Given how good Bolton has become, I chuckle thinking back on a discussion I had that day, standing on the hill at Punt Road oval, with a Port Adelaide recruiter who I knew through a mutual friend. Let’s just say he was quite dismissive/wary of taking Shai Bolton for various reasons. They had picks 14, 18 and 32 that year.

But given what he said, it always struck me as odd that they didn’t have any concerns going with SPP at their second selection who I believe some had character reservations about.

the clug vs mcg debate can never have a completion, because our development program stinks and we probably would have stinked up clug if we took him instead

Parish and Merrett turned into elite midfielders under the same program as Andy (parish even had a worse development program than Andy). McLuggage would have turned into the same gun he is if he was here.

It’s got nothing to do with development, it’s just that Andy isn’t a midfielder at AFL level.

he’s actually a pretty decent midfielder when fit and up and about, as in 25 possies 7 tackles sort of mid, so he is afl level

he’s more elite playing hb though

That’s a pretty fair assessment IMO.

Andy has no problems getting the ball, but his ball use as a midfielder is poor, in terms of not hurting the opposition and resulting in turnovers.

I think people look in to disposal stats too much

He aint elite at either of the roles mate.

Our next captain needs to be able to influence the result of the game in a positive way. Neither Heppell or McGrath do that. Not saying McGrath is a bad player as a HBF’er, but he does not influence games IMO. TBH, I’m not sure we have anyone on the list that is capable of doing this other than Stringer and he’s not Captain material.
