Strictly Australian and not including any Kiwi bands then I have the following

  1. Go Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane
  2. Go Betweens - Liberty Belle
  3. The Church - Heyday
  4. Clouds - Penny Century
  5. Hoodoo Gurus - Stoneage Romeos

  7. The Avalanches - Since I left You
  8. Midnight Oil - Red Sails in the Sunset
  9. Rolling Blackouts - Hope Downs

If I included Kiwi Bands I’d find Space for The Chills - Submarine Bells and/or Brave Words The Bats - Daddy’s Highway

Very good list!

Would like to get more recent stuff on but I’ve been an expat for 21 years now so my expertise is pretty lacking after 2000. If we do a list next time of Chinese punk/alternative I’m ready. I played in a rock/punk band in Beijing for about 6 years and there are a surprisingly large number of seriously good local Beijing bands (check out Car Sick Cars, Hedgehog). We played in the most bizarre places back then including a Chinese drive In Theatre, a bar built into the wall of the Forbidden city and a Swedish Consulate Prawn festival. I was also at a show when the Dirty 3 came to play and were shut down halfway through the show when the local communist officials turned up at the theatre demanding to see the Chinese Acrobats.

Boooo.
Put 'em in order.

I feel like it could have been a top 50 and I would still want more. We have been blessed in this country with some truly gifted and talented artists over the journey. I could have thrown in The Masters Apprentices, Goanna, John Farnham, Tina Arena, Little River Band, Swanee, Mental as Anything, Peter Allen, Australian Crawl, Moving Pictures, Bee Gees, Daddy Cool, Weddings Parties Anything, Choirboys, Hoodoo Gurus, Noiseworks, Silverchair, Midnight Oil, Redgum, Billy Thorpe, Keith Urban, Slim Dusty, Eurogliders, The Church, The Temper Trap, Winterbourne, Gotye!! Jesus, the list just goes on and on and on.
