#13 Nik Cox - thru 2026 (Part 1)

Cox looked quite good when he was in defensive 50 today. Made a couple of good spoils. Looks far more at home.

It’s time to move him back there.

How do we realistically move him into our current backline?

I like the idea of it, just not sure how he fits.

Im looking at a Cutler role.

Not sure who played there today without Hind or Cutler. But it would have been a good chance to move him back there.

I’ve got another take on this, and think it’s because he’s been pinged for high tackles and therefore he may be hesitant and is trying to avoid giving away a free. Given his height he needs to adjust his tackling technique.

just a thought

So just to confirm, what you’re saying is that everyone else is actually 400cm tall?

He’s been awful this year- I don’t care if he has a huge tank and/or he was number 8 draft pick - it’s no point running around the ground like a headless chook and not impacting the game….For me he needs to go back to the reserves and be played as a tall/key defender where he is accountable.
Keep him playing there until his form screams out for senior selection again. Continuing to play him in the seniors in the form he’s in only damages his confidence and prospects longer term.

Maybe the Ridley role long term. Ridley is terribly out of form and was recruited as a chef why not play him there

Is that the Skipworth role? Someone needs to call Gordon Ramsey because we have a player waaay out of position.

Cox is another bust.

He lacks intensity at the moment, and it’s coming off as soft. He needs to up his intensity and part of that is just going low and nailing blokes in tackles.

Hopefully he learnt a thing or two playing on Sidebottom.

Watching from level 4, Steele basically did what he wanted for most of the game. The reason why he didn’t get more ball or be more damaging wasn’t Cox.

My wife who doesn’t watch much footy at all even commented “who’s that 22 for Collingwood? He’s just roaming around doing whatever he wants”.

Cox was chasing ■■■ (pun intended) most of the game. Had some good contests. But you can see he is shying away from contact.
When Langford is back we will have to roll with Langford/Martin/Durham as the wings and find a new home for Cox for now.

Thankfully, Steele hasn’t been too damaging this year. If it was a good winger we would have been in trouble.

I agree. Cox is soft and needs to harden up.

He’s not a winger. Stop playing him as a winger. 85,000 people can see it at the ground clear as day.

Seeing him get carved up by wingman who are faster, harder, more agile and 15-20 cms shorter is painful week on week.

Not his fault. Play him either forward or back. ■■■■ me, even Geelong ditched playing Blicavs on a wing.

But they did play him there whilst he built the strength to play KP.

I think the issue with Cox is time, maybe more HB/HF is the go for now.

Kind’ve feel Cox won’t be strong enough to handle a key post. He’s got the Porzingas look in the NBA. Pencil arms an legs. Maybe when he’s about 27 after years of blitz abuse an 3 coaches later with X an Dodoro still running the joint he might look like one

Cox has been disappointing, but it’s very premature to call him a bust. He’s still just a kid, stick thin and, I’m guessing, with some confidence issues.

I don’t think he’s a winger, certainly not at the moment. He slows our momentum by hanging onto to the all too long hoping to do the special when he should be doing the instinctive.

I’d be playing him off the HBF and setting him a defensive task. I think having a defined purpose would help him, as he seems lost otherwise. Longer term, I see him as a key defender.

For now, I’d be giving him an extended run in the twos. Let him develop his game and gain some confidence. Right now I fear he’s developing bad habits and his confidence is running down. Give him a role and encourage him to play his natural game.

I think we need to look at how Cats have developed Blicavs, it’s worked really well. He was a high endurance bean pole, and now he is a KPP and bloody good one. But being on the wing a few years was a part of it at the start if I recall correctly.

It’s time.

Someone teach him the about…the steeplechase.

Devil’s advocate time. Is Cox that good of an athlete? Have we overrated his athleticism? What is his point of difference?

He’s not even close to being on par with the King boys, Jamarra, Blicavs, Jackson, Hipwood etc in terms of explosiveness and agility for a 198-200 cm footballer.

There needs to be a strategy behind his selection. Start settling him into his long term position so that he can start to use his football nous. It’s not the wing.
