now we 4 weeks on and now it’s a 4-8 week away.
so if he was fit enough then to resume playing in the vfl, were they not building him up and being cautious then ?
or has he had a set back and it’s being hidden ?
and if they are being cautious and all that, then why is Reid not doing similar work and on a similar timeframe ?
if it’s inconsequential about playing essentially and merely about “getting their bodies right for the next 10 years”.
tis the same with tstartas (sp) went from ready to play, to re injuring to oh now we want to build him up and make sure he’s ready so he’ll be out til after the bye.
seems more and more fishy about not wanting to properly report on some of the youngsters and their ongoing injury troubles.
I get the “do you believe everything you hear” i am cynical as anyone on our medical team tbh. No doubt they ramped him up and then he felt his back again after a few weeks of full training. There was a setback. Backs are tricky. Was it a massive blow… i don’t believe so. Cox told me over the fence it wasn’t … unless he is lying too. You don’t know if its a one off or an ongoing issue with backs. Both have different rehab approaches. So yes its now a repeating issue that they have to see a specialist and set-out a strengthening program. Pretty similar to Reid actually. Hopefully they come back this year stronger and there body can start to settle.
me, personally am in no what suprised we spent 2 top farkin 10 draft picks on a couple of 200cm guys who are stick insects and cannot get their bodies right and have now missed years of development. they are three years in, and most top 10 picks who are any good are usually cementing their spots in a side 3 years later. ours are in hospital
It can never be pinned on recruitment for how players bodies then cope under the training programs which are an enormous step up from junior footy and this all while young players are still growing
Doesn’t just happen to talls
Nathan Freeman at Pies ended up a chronic hammy case
There has been a stark difference in the way training and injuries have been managed this year in comparison to last year.
Even through pre-season, you could see they were being super cautious with players.
When Wright injured his calf, they relaxed him for a week or two, made sure it was right, then got him going again bit by bit.
It doesn’t always work out. Guelfi did his calf the same week. Came back through VFL then did a hammy after being sub.
It is frustrating, but we’ll go through it this year. Hopefully they can get enough fitness base into players to give them a good crack at a strong pre-season.
I wonder if the full training was actually correct.
He may have taken part in some drills.
The biggest note is if he is included in the full ground drills.
He may have done one, pushed himself a bit too much and paid the price for it.
The communication is terrible. I don’t recall Tsatas getting involved in the full ground drills since he’s been injured. May have done the odd smaller drills though.
Tsatas was there today, but did more running and observing. He stood right near Brad Scott for one of the drills.
This issue is mainly to do with talls and back injuries.
Other sports are going through similar problems.
It’s almost better not to draft talls as there is a lot of risk involved in them.
If they hit a growth spurt after drafting them, it does screw with their body.
I’m not sure how much into an individual’s medical history you can delve into during a players draft year. It’ll be good to know whether there is anything during the combine that can identify how a tall players growth affects their bone structure.
This is why talls are the most valuable in the game. Peter Wright was such a good pickup for us and now we are taking a chance in another in Weidman.
Established talls in there mid 20s cost an arm and a leg. Drafting tall kpp take at least 4 years, and injury setbacks are common place accross all clubs.
Its far for easy, especially when 195cm is now pretty much a medium tall.
You have to think if our recruiting staff are underrating physical size as an attribute at draft night.
We have taken so many talls who came to the club sub 80kgs (Ridley, Zerk, Reid, Cox, Jones) many of those with top 30 picks. I was having a look at the likes of Curnow, DeKonigs, the Kings, etc. and they were all 85kg plus coming into the league.
Yes they have talent, but risk of injury is high, and there’s massive question marks if you can get them to over 95kg. Adding 10kg to a 85kg frame is a completely different challenge to putting 20kg on a 75kg frame
Reid and Cox were in a similar weight range to the Kings and Sam De Koning, with Cox being heavier than all of them but 2kg less than TDK. Charlie Curnow was a man child. He has actually lost weight since starting.
Ridley, Jones and Zerk were lighter, but also shorter, by 5-10cms.
