#13 Nik Cox - thru 2026 (Part 1)

He will be a run up at,and over the pack kind of mark not contested.

And just burn blokes on a lead.

Creating the mismatch will be his modus operandi in contested situations.

Somebody update the thread name - should be Nik ā€˜Mismatch’ Cox going forward

The only time I saw him in those highlights use his ā€œnon-optimalā€ foot was having a shot from about 40 when he kicked on his left from a slight angle.

So I was assuming that he was a natural left footer…

Also, I thought the biggest knock on him was his contested marking? Didn’t seem to be much of a problem in those highlights.

He will be a run and jump at it contested marker.

Not a hold your ground type.

Which is fine.

I prefer the ā€œanythingā€ to be an Essendon premiership player.

I prefer to never hear such a banal and obvious statement.

"Could be anything", … ah, ya don’t say.???

Big Cox future position?
  • Forward
  • Defender
  • Wing
  • Utility

Start him on the wing and leave him there.

Has there ever been a 6’5 winger with Nik’s running capabilities in the league? I can’t really think of one (Blicavs sort of).

Point I’m trying to make is having a 6’5 winger is a massive point of difference for us. There are 6’5 Key backs/forwards that can run, but not an out and out winger. Having Cox really gives us a chance to innovate with the position and do something that hasn’t been done. Hope
We get creative.

Coaches will know best, but I’m Team Wing.

His running capabilities will inevitably diminish as he stacks on another 10kg or whatever to get an afl-ready body. He may well still be a very good runner for a 200cm bloke, but I’d expect that by that time the endurance smalls will leave him in their dust.

His running capabilities will be a weapon when pitted against other talls. You can’t reasonably expect he’ll remain a top-handful runner as he fills out.

Hopefully he’s still out marking midfielders though…

But he’s closer to 6’7ā€ than 6’5ā€.

Can kick a footy on both sides cleanly. All I need to know.

Of all the positions he could play, surely not wing. It’s fantasy to think someone of his frame would excel over the elite.

Is it just me or does this guy have a 2m tall Stanton appearance…

And his contested possession numbers are incredibly low suggesting he is not a credible wingman.

Hopefully we don’t try to use him as a utility type.

Choose a position and let him develop into that position.

We’ve chopped and changed a lot with some players’ positions.

I hope we play him forward.
