#13 Nik Cox - thru 2026

Assessment
Painfully slow, skinny, (not even wiry) can’t play KP, not a wingman, 11 disposal,
rudderless (not due to coaching) introverted player on the list who can’t handball.
Can kick it either leg, tackles stick (at 2 per game) accurate in front of goals (8 goals in 2024).
Verdict
Cut your losses and shop around

He twice kicked 3 goals in a game this season.

I think he should be playing as our 3rd tall forward. He’s a tricky matchup because of his height. If you don’t respect him and put a small on him he out-marks them kicks goals. If you put a key back on him then you risk Langford and Caddy hurting you.

I think that’s his spot.

I didn’t rate him, didn’t care that he left. Between that Saint game and him liking our heart breaking loss to Collingwood he had a long way back with me. If he stayed on the list he would have been given a shot as small forward and he still would be in and out of the side. Good choice by him, he’s played better than I thought he could.

This guy has trade currency. We’re too tall but other teams would need his height.

I’d be shopping him.

Im a huge fan of cox, but it’s clear we have NFI what we want him to be, nor have we ever had any idea. He should be traded out. He will get us a second rounder and his career will flourish.

Talls coming to Essendon is a death sentence.

I never saw a footballer in him. He’s been more competitive this year which was great, but I doubt he has much more up side. Time to trade

He just re-signed, he ain’t getting traded you numpties.

The list of plodders we need to cull before worrying about Nik is longer than our collective arms.

Just play him in a position that suits him next year.

Agreed. I’m not joking when I say we should have played Hind as sub 23 times this year as a kind of pseudo-protest in addition to development play.

All the plodders are signed to long term deals.
Can’t reshape the list even if we tried.

Fringe players that change nothing.

The core is rotten.

The more I think about our list moving forward, the more I really really cant see where this guy fits in.
He is too slow to play on the wing, and his point of difference being his height does really nothing for us because he isnt a notably good mark.

Really dont see how he fits in anymore.
He is not a better winger than Martin, Duurs, Roberts or even Hawli, and if you really MUST have one tall winger Jones is just flat out better than him at it.

Where was this guy touted to go in his draft?

I looked at the early posts in this thread and he was touted as being one of the best picks in the draft
I recall his early games being impressive
But that has been coached out of him

Theres no position for him. But didnt we just re-sign him anyway? In fairness, was a tough draft to get right. Oh to have pick 6/7/8 this year

Think his best bet is primarily as a third forward who can pinch hit in the ruck and offer flexibility where needed around the ground.

Not sure how that fits in with the likes of Jones, Langford, Stringer, Perkins though.

Therein lies a problem. Too many tall mediocre forward types. Totally unbalanced, especially with Draper resting forward and Peter can’t hold a mark Wright.

Yep. Where did the confidence and dare go? His kicking isn’t penetrating now either.

He has his faults no doubt but I don’t think Essendon have done a great job of harnessing g his strengths and finding a role for him that suits him, and then developed him in that role.

After seeing some finals highlights of yesteryear on tv this week
I think I can see some resemblance with Justin Westoff.
Started well in his first year.
Then in the following seasons, changed positions a few times, some ruck, some wing, played defence when needed. Got dropped a few times even in years 3-5.

Westoff ended up with 300+ games and a BnF at the age of 32.

He also played in a strong Port team where his deficiencies weren’t highlighted every week.
