#16 “OMG it’s Archie” Perkins

Boo hoo, the coaches are giving him an opportunity in a developing year to grow as midfielder.

I can’t believe he isn’t an all Australian mid yet!?

I don’t expect the kids to be superstars but there has to be some non negotiables as far as effort goes.
Hobbs isn’t the cleanest user of the ball but I love him because he is a competitor and you know he will give you 100% for every second of the game. You put Hobbs’s attitude and attribute into Perkins and he is one of the best players in the comp

Really mind boggling commentary in here, 20 possessions, really good contested marking through the game including the crucial mark close to goal at the end AND delivers the sealer under pressure.

Exactly what do people think a half forward is supposed to do and are we under the impression that doing it at AFL level is easy?

Everyone on this forum expect every player to be a star within 3 years of debuting.

Its moronic.

Negative.

Happy clapper blitz by-law #35.

No player under 25 can be criticised for anything, ever.

I have no problem with Archie’s development. The kid is class…sure he doesn’t have that manic Wardlaw-esque attack, but he’ll certainly damage a lot of side with his creative kicking and strength at the contest.

Did Cox still your GF back in high school? I mean you’re in the the Archie Perkins thread and you still can’t resist a pot shot

This seems to be the standard response to any criticism of a player if you don’t rate them at all. I don’t rate him (Cox). I’m hoping he is like Langford but we can’t wait that long for every player to come good.
I will try to keep my criticism of him to every second game if he doesn’t put in a decent performance. So that will be the Collingwood game.

12 kicks, 8 handballs but 7 turnovers.
I reckon he has enormous potential, but agree that it’s not as a mid. He does not have enough speed when chasing to make an impact. His strength is marking, breaking tackles and he can kick a goal under pressure. Leave him forward.

But you’re in the Perkins thread and you still feel the need to criticise the same player that you criticise time and time again, it’s ok to not rate a player but it’s ■■■■■■■ odd that you do not miss an opportunity to put him down, even in other players threads

It’s bizarre

Not really. The number people who love Cox and defend him with no real justification compared to any other player of the same age is very different.
Archie, Durham and even Menzie who is even younger doesn’t get the same kind of blind support.
I’m just comparing two players of the same age and wondering why one player gets bashed with little support, yet you are in here defending Cox.

It’s bizzare.

I think the midfield time is a valuable learning experience for Archie. It is forcing some aspects of his game into sharp relief meaning he has to improve them, he can’t hide it or coast. It may not reap maximum reward for the team in the short term, but longer term it could be to our and his betterment.

Its because Cox is a 200 cm endurance freak, so he’s got that as a natural upside. I and others can tolerate a big development/learning curve for Cox because he has freak natural attributes. Whreas someone like Menzie has a lower ceiling. I like Menzie, and you wont see me knocking him but in terms of development you need to look at the upside that player have and put your focus into that.

Perkins midfield minutes are actually helping his attitude. As a forward you dont get to be in the mix as much. Perkins is learning that hes not as good as.he thinks he is and i actually thought he was in the play almost more than ever today even though hes findng the midfield hard work. That hard work I think helped give him the anger to make sure we didnt lose the game.

What a champion mark and goal. Good on him.

he’s better value as a permanent HF

issue is we’re down stringer, shiel, caldwell, setterfield in the midfield

Replace He with Essendon in this paragraph

I reckon this a very good read of the situation. The coaches are broadening his roles on the field, some of them alien to how he has played throughout the junior and early senior career. For example, he has played a few times as a tagger, more I think to teach him some discipline in defending a player.

My gut feel, is once he realises how good his best is, and he truly belongs, then he will be a very solid player for a long time.

Im pretty sure this is the tackling technique that all players are taught down the club. Merret must get lambasted for not following protocol.
I agree though its not talent holding Archie back, his workrate needs to catchup with his self importance and he will be fine.
A few times lowering his colours this year will have the fire burning for next hopefully.

Wow you’re truly ■■■■■■■ delusional

Your justification is all kinds of weird, he must’ve done something to you?

Blind support? Love and defence with no justification?

This is an astonishing take on Bomberblitz’ opinion of Cox.

He hasn’t gone backwards. He’s fitting into a new role. He’s played some good games as a defensive centre square presence, and some poor ones. It happens. We WANT him (and our other kids) to become a more rounded player, but that isn’t the same thing as going backwards.

The one thing I’ve puzzled over is that he seems to have lost a bit of distance on his set shot kicking. 45 meters suddenly seems to max him out. No idea why, different strength and conditioning program? Heavy legs from a training program that hasn’t eased off? Carrying a little injury? Just my imagination? Dunno.
