#16 “OMG it’s Archie” Perkins

he had a pretty underwhelming game, but definitely made things happen the few times he touched it, 10-15 might just be he his go and we have to wear that

Anyone got his CBA stats? It felt like he was in there a lot and just didn’t get involved.
I feel like he should be first receiver instead of being in and under.

Didn’t get into the game much.
Merrett played well. So did Durham. So did Caldwell.
As a midfield group we did okay when we had the ball. Defensively it was pretty patchy.

I’m pretty sure he splits CBAs with Durham and Stringer. So whenever he’s buggered, the others give him the chop out.
Not sure who his direct opponent around the ground was though.

Still not convinced what type of player he is.

The run down the wing and the brush off of an eagles tackle was excellent. Does some good things, but agree goes missing / doesn’t impact for decent periods.

I do query his attitude a little (hard from a distance). There was a contest on the wing where he thought he might have got a free, he stopped, looked at the ump. Didn’t get back to the contest. Cox on the other hand just kept going at the man and the ball. His defensive efforts are not as strong as most of the list, so definitely an area to improve.

Would like to see him on a half back flank. He’s a good kick and got some height about him too. Puts him in the way of ball so hopefully become more involved.

I watched him closely and at stoppages he just stands there and marks his man…theres no ‘craft’ or tactics it seems. The ball literally has to drop in his lap for him to get a possession.

Im assuming that’s what the coaches are asking him to do but the more i watch, the more im worried about his midfield craft.

Maybe he is just a creative half forward.

He sure ain’t a midfielder.

Felt like his confidence is down and he wasn’t very dynamic today.

He would benefit from a Caldwell style break out preseason as his fitness holds him back a bit.

Was he on Ryan in the centre?

He had some amazing moments, the key word being moments. Needs to step it up either in the midfield or by contributing up forward with some goals.

If we’re going to be a genuinely good team in the coming years, we need this guy to step up. He is definitely capable. I reckon his biggest issue is that he loses concentration too often.

Archie is still in that teasing mode. That play on the wing showed some of his worth, speed, strength to break a tackle and then able to put the ball to the right spot leading to a goal. He is still a step up on last year imo just by the eye-test.

More of that. I wish we could implant Tsatas’s ball pig ability into Archie. As we get more midfielders back into the team I hope the coaches give him some development time on the HBF swapping with Martin. I think tank is Archie’s biggest area to improve on, but he reads as a more explosive type who usually take longer to develop an >80% game time base.

But as for comparison Archie is year younger than Durham and below is the comparison between Archie’s year and Durham’s last year.

We needed to keep someone out the front of the square to stop their easy access. Maybe that will be Hobbs.

Usually there’s a defender that runs off the back of the square.
Martin was doing that against Carlton. But then, they weren’t getting those clearance and we could switch him forward.

In this game, he started forward and no other defender was able to be that player off the back of the square.

I also recall Parish playing defensive side of the CBA, but whoever was there at the CBA didn’t play that role. I also recall Parish being critiqued for not being his usual self at CBAs. Players are still trying to learn the optimum positioning depending on who your direct opponent is.

Lucky for us, the Eagles didn’t make us pay. Probably happened 4 times and they only get a score maybe once from those advances.

Needs a spell in the VFL. Just not contributing.

Yep, just no consistency to his game at all.

Ryan was playing CBA weird, really sat back a long way and was waiting for his opponent to go in front then he would read the play and make space or crash through as pace. Was a good strategy. Second half each time he went back further our player went behind to stop him was over half way to the edge square in the last few CBA.

Perkins is going to take a bit longer to fully come on than other players.
He is a big work in progress as a midfielder but I think we have seen samples of what he can become once he nails the role.
For me, I dont so much mind him not getting the ball as much, but I would like to see him bring the same defensive intent that he had in the first 5 rounds of the year each week.

When he is not playing in the middle he is playing objectively the hardest role in footy as a high half forward, so him going missing in games is going to happen.
Talks of dropping him for me are madness, but he does need to lift again defensively as he was fantastic as that earlier in the year. He is not alone in that regard though.
