He reminds me of Heeney. Probably not as influential in games as Heeney was early but I see the same journey for him. Might take him a while playing forward to build up into a more mid role later in his career.
That ball he marked against Melbourne on the wing jumping like a salmon certainly reminded me of Heeney anyway.
Your use of the past tense is duly noted and in this case is warranted. Having said that, he looks to have traded his elusiveness for strength in the tackle. Easier to find, but now harder to bring down, that sounds like a decent trade off.
I listened to Don the Stat podcast and one of the hosts said that moving Archie into the middle is helping him get into games more; something he’s been working on with the coaches as an area of improvement so maybe I went a bit hard there!!
I loved Perkins game. He went deeper and lead to the ball hard. Showed strong hands and not a moments hesitation, as soon as it was his grab go back and stick it over the umps hat.
It’s not just with Archie, as it happened numerous times with different players.
And it’s not just Essendon, as you see it happen with other sides.
I don’t know if it’s a follow the game plan thing… surely it can’t be that rigid. Or they think the option is better, which a lot of times it ain’t as it’s typically a kick to a contest.
If they need to inject him into the game, I’d rather see him coming off the back of the square in CBs, whatever any says about his games he is an elite kick entering the forward 50.
He gives away too much as a starting CB mid but as a designated kicker coming from behind at the bounce it might work better for him.
