#19 - Kayle Gerreyn

I rated him as the best kick in his draft class. He’s got that lazy power and timing… and sometimes just gets too lazy and shanks it. I expect with increased maturity those shanks will stop.

He was always a high risk/reward guy who was going to take time. The worry was if he had the drive to be great. At the moment it feels as though he’s tracking nicely.

I seem him as a similar kicking style to Sicily. He is a great kick but can get lazy especially when he hooks it

As a junior he was quite strong on the weaker foot. I haven’t really seen him using it for us but I don’t watch all the VFL games.

So can he play AFL this week or next week?
Or does a 1 game VFL ban mean he’s out for 2 weeks in the AFL?- that seems dumb but we’re talking about one of the most inept organisations in the country here

I’m not sure of the rules.

for 1 week (Which was the suspension) or 2 weeks (Because VFL have a bye)?

A suspension has to be served at the level (AFL or VFL) as it was incurred. This is to stop clubs manipulating the situation.

Bank this. Buddy had a minder when he arrived at Hawthorn. Went everywhere to provide guidance.

Understand it might be different but this bloke might be similar. More about physically developing.

Hopefully Matt guelfi isn’t his minder

Seems we’ve got a lot of tall back talent. What to do with them all?

I thought he was very impressive on Sunday. It’s rare we have a kid this big that has very good skills.

I’d be giving Reid a rest this week and put Kayle in

He’s suspended isn’t he

Yup but what I figure is that he’ll only be unsuspended once he serves a match ban in the VFL IE next weekend not this weekend

Does it though? Would you send caddy to defence to help him develop?.

I believe you develop players where you want them to be their best and to waste two years playing them out of position would be crazy.

I hope he goes back to the forward line, he has that certain type of arrogance that we are really missing there and clearly he has some mongrel to go with his size.

You do realise there are a huge amount of fantastic afl player who played a different position in juniors to what they do in the afl right?

Also if he is to play some time as ruck in the future having a solid grounding in defensive positioning and being comfortable deep in D50 will be a huge bonus, especially considering our current inability and unwillingness to defend

Ruck/forward as a junior means nothing when your talking long term afl future, he was always a project type, maybe thats because he was played out of position as a junior?

I think it’s different for every kid. But ideally I think you’re correct. You want to settle them early into where you see them fit. But.

If a guys a switched off a bit, not high footy game strategy IQ, doesn’t have a huge amount of tricks, lack that real ingrained work ethic. Then moving him to a position where he get led around has to think less and you can build that. Then maybe a move to the backline, simplifying things and giving him a job for a while can help build some of that.

When you have a high motivation, can learn quickly and have the tools to play a role, then getting them settled early I think would work best. A guy like parish I think we really burned a bit early by not just playing him as a primary mid.

Another I think we have impacted the team too much moving them around like Martin. It was clear he was going to be a mid. Moving him from HFF to mor wing mid was a logical progression. His HB time I don’t think really helped us or him at all.
