Gold!!!
Gotta tell you this now, Clone Hirdy. Some years ago I actually met Wayne Harmes. I said to him “Can I ask you a cheeky question?” He said “Sure.” I said “In all honesty, was that ball out of bounds when you slapped it back in and the Blues scored the winning goal?” He answered “Did the boundary umpire call it out of bounds?” Me “No but…” Him “Well it wasn’t out of bounds.”
Now I don’t know about you, but to me when someone answers a question like that it is as dodgy as all hell. If it didn’t go out of bounds he would not have answered that way.
I think in the Harmes instance it was fair. The boundary umpire would have had no view of it from such a distance away and would have been guessing. It’s possible that Harmes wouldn’t be sure as it happened so fast and he was diving at full stretch. It deserved the resulting goal. In Longy’s instance the goal umpire probably should have seen the deflection but you can understand if he didn’t as it happened so fast and there would also have been pressure to give it a goal rather than be a killjoy because he wasn’t sure.
Awesome performance by Dermie that day. His team got smashed but he managed to beat up half our backmen, strut around the goal square like it was the greatest day of his life, and smash through eight goals. You had to admire him, and being 80 points up made it easy even for someone like me to be magnanimous.
To me that just makes him an egotistical moron, but each to his own opinion. Just saying.
As a footballer Silvangi was a cheat, sure he touched the ball that day,but that was about an hour later when they were fifty points down in the last quarter
Looking at the recording for the umpteenth time, my opinion remains the same, he touched it just before it went over the line. However, it means very little except as one more thing those salary cap rorting Blooos fans can cry over. I do apreciate SOS’s body language when he slumps after realizing that his pleas are all in vain. That slump just screams defeat.
The more pertinent question is “Did Silvagni really hold that forward by the jumper for five minutes, flinging him to the ground before the ball even landed in the area and still ended up earning himself a free kick?” Now that’s a question I would love to hear SOS respond to.
If in some way, Long’s “touched on the line goal” is just a little payback for Sivagni’s years of being a hack pretender, then I will take it.
The boundary umpire (for the Harmes goal) was a massive Collingwood fan. Lovely guy.
The goal umpire actually made the call that it was in play because the boundary umpire was so far away - and stood by the decision afterwards.
A bit tongue in cheek.
But, the umpire was in perfect position. And when we look at the scorecard, it stands as a goal.
The fact the goal umpire was probably sourced from the Essendon cheer squad, and wore a ‘M. Long 13’ duffle coat to the game hasn’t got anything to do with it.
It’s a classic GF moment.
Can anyone name as good a highlight from the 2000 GF?
Not really. It was very uneventful in terms of highlights. That’s why you rarely see any replayed. The main things that get replayed are Long’s bump and Hird getting body slammed by Schwartz.
While 1993 wasn’t a close game it certainly had memorable moments.
Wallis on Mil Hanna
Long’s goal
Wanganeen’s long run and point
Calthorpe goal from the centre bounce
Misiti shot from the pocket after the siren
Daniher fend off and goal after Long toying with the blues
Take it to the Red and Black humour thread.
The vids have gave me something to laugh about at last. Touched? Who gives a fark, great goal by a bomber legend.
The umpire must have had his eyes shut. Or maybe he barracked for us even though we all know umpires are absolutely and totally unbiased.
Flinging himself diagonally across the line, who knows where the ball was when he touched it?
Would need to see the goal line video.
But, as usual, not surprised to see so many being dogmatic about it.
Watching the game now with the kids. Fark I miss supporting a good team!
2000, Longy again, cleaning up the Melbourne defender. Think he got weeks for it but it was a sweet hit.
Carlton supporters always fail to mention that. Similar was all the sooking about the Wanganeen Brownlow win by Carlton and Greg Williams, yet they always fail to mention that Williams did not win the Carlton B&F that year
Did SOS touch it?
Possible bordering on probable.
Do l care?
Not at all. Him touching it and not being beleived is mildly amusing. That is all. Moving on…
Longy still one of the all time favs. I remember when we recruited him a few recruiters said he could turn out to be the best player in the draft. Then before he come to Melbourne he went out fishing and failed to come back on time and there was a search for him. All my Essendon friends were seriously stressed. Anyway was all good in the end
Time has probably eroded a bit of my memory so any clarification on the story would be welcome
I feel like people bemoaning the lack of 2000 GF highlights are forgetting Wallis fixing his own dislocated finger.
