Respectfully, I don’t think that’s as relevant as you think.
Myriad of factors come into play. Were all of those players absolute needs based choices that the club was psyched to get and selected by a competent list manager? And who’s to say we don’t split the pick? Obviously, my faith in Rosa is coming into play here.
And if you still wanted to speak of the history of pick 5, I’d offer up Travis Boak, Lance Franklin, Scott Pendlebury and Michael Hurley.
Fair enough if you see it differently but to suggest that you wouldn’t do that trade ‘in a million years’ is a touch strong.
As a pure ruckman I think Draper is quite comfortably replaced. There are plenty of guys at his level floating around.
But a guy who can ruck to his level who can also be as dangerous as he is (currently looking) in the forward line? That’s a different story, and where his value gets bumped right up.
Which is that it’s only worth in total as part of our whole hand?
Why would would assess another way?
If we couldn’t get Reid I still think 4, 5 and 10 is good for us.
Draper is 27 next year. Do you think the list in it’s present state will be competitive within the next say 3 years?
The big question mark over draper for me is how quickly does his pace disappear because when that goes he really doesn’t have the footy skills and smarts to fall back on
Not to go all Wim but…
This bloke rucks and crashes packs…
He and Zac each have twice as many goals as anyone else on our list this season…
He works on his shortcomings and develops his game in groundbreaking ways…
We are short ruck and forward options…
He loves the club and raises the energy in a team of polite reserved gents…
I can’t even- but if you want to- you do you but I mean…
The early signs aren’t bad but it’s too soon to advance Draper’s exploits forward as a reason to keep him. We’ll see how it plays out.
I’d disagree that we’re short ruck options. That’s partly why he’s dispensible. But we’re definitely short on half backs, small forwards and wingers.
As mentioned earlier, my endless and undying love for Rosa is influencing my take. If Draper goes we’ll have 3 top ten picks with one, possibly 2 in the top 5. Unlike that other weasal, I’d back this guy to nail 2 of them.
I’d still be shocked if the offers he gets triggers band 1 compo.
1 - Because of the raw salary I think he’ll be offered relative to the recently inflated TPP won’t be outrageous
2 - Age comes into the AFL’s magic spices calculation and plays quite a role apparently and Draper will be 27 this trade period. For reference Ben McKay was just 25.
He is the same age as battle who got first round compo for a 850k contract over six years.
So if the rumours of 900k are true that’s well and truely round 1 compo
