#2 Big Sammy Draper (from May 2024)

Draper was picked up in the Rookie draft. If we can take a rookie pick with fitness issues and turn them into a first round draft pick during a period of need then its a bloody win!

I hear the lure of Paddy Ryder’s family in both cities is making his choice difficult.

Players were devo when he went down they love Drapes and the engery he brings they walk taller around him.

They are missing his presence

That’s rubbish
The only thing wrong with the club is the coach
Team selections, alienation of certain players
Eg Tsatis
3 years of mediocrity and counting

So Brad’s been coach for 20 years?

Our best players

Merrett, Durham, Z Reid , Caddy, Draper, Martin.

All of those can if you like be ā€œeliteā€ in their positions or have the potential to be. They would be welcome on any list

We can’t let Draper walk. Unless it helps us get another serious a grade talent

Only 3 years?

20+ years of horrible list management.

Wow.

I’m not a fan of Scott, but I don’t reckon he is top 5 in issues with the club.

List
Injury management
Player fitness
Player culture
Player leadership

Then maybe Scott’s coaching decisions. Maybe. A lot of historical missteps we are still paying for.

Seems letting go the likes of Stringer and Hind didnt get the message through to the players still some left.

Injury management is number one issue for me. We just can’t get any continuity with the best 22.

Which feeds into everything really

No 3 years
Can you say you’ve enjoyed it
Have we progressed since he arrived
No we’ve gone backwards
2013 we were set to play finals until the AFL shafted us
Who knows what that team could have achieved. And they were all Dodoro recruits
So it hasn’t exactly been 20 years

Not true
Were you too young to remember the saga

I’ve never got to the end of a season and been able to once place Draper in the top 10 rucks in the competition. In fact you’d go so far as to say that he’s probably always been in the bottom 5 starting rucks nearly every year.

You can point to injuries or whatever but that’s what’s actually happened.

This year is the first time I’ve ever thought he looked like he could be approaching being considered a reliable, above average ruckman, incidentally in a contract year, and it’s ended with him doing possibly the worst injury you could do as a ruckman with no promises of how he’ll come back.

It gets to a point when you have to stop leaning on ā€˜potential’ and just assess the output and let go.

I haven’t enjoyed the past 20 years.

We’ve had premiership players and coaches over that time that haven’t made a difference.

The past 3 years have been more influential than anything in the previous 16-17. The highlight being the removal of the biggest ā– ā– ā– ā–  stain to ever walk into this club…Adrian Dodoro.

Hoyne from CD had a conversation about this and that often the grand finalists are the generally the teams who have been the most healthy.

Believe Lions used only 34 players last year or something like that.

If we are serious about a rebuild we should be letting draper walk.

We have signed the below players on significant money and length and I don’t think you’d say we are getting value from any of them.

Parish
Redman
Ridley
Gresham
McGrath
McKay
Langford

With hindsight admittedly you couldn’t say any of those were the right decision given what we are paying them.

All those other things apply but he’s no 1 IMO
Fish rots at the head
It is actually his job to you know develop an effective game plan, psych them
So 3 years after getting the gig he’s decided it’s the list - not his incompetence
What bs did he spin at his recruitment interview
The only reason he’s playing the young players now is because of our injuries

It wouldn’t be a trade

Well I think he shown enough that we would be selling high.

I do think he’s currently one of the most important players on our list.

We are a LOT better with him in the side. Wherever your rate him in the league.

Hes a cheaper Luke Jackson imho.
