#2 Big Sammy Draper (from May 2024)

I agree, and believe they can make the 2 ruck set up work. I also like the way Sammy threw Grundy out of the way like a sack of wheat.

Yeah but the strategy can be tweaked, can we re teach our smalls how to play the small forward role? Questionable and uncertain

Settle down. He was better. For a half. But let’s leave the sublime hyperbole on the interchange bench for now

His improvement up forward has been encouraging. It’s the only way a partnership with Bryan can work, because I can’t see Bryan tuning into a fwd/ruck. He’s given us more than 2MP has this season. At least he competes.

Been one of the few shining lights in the absolute cluster-■■■■ of post bye period.

And what has happened to Kyle Langford? He has all but disappeared.

Peter Wright is a shadow of himself.

And he jumps at it.

I’ve been very critical of Sam and have advocated him getting traded. He’s put 2-3 weeks of decent performances as forward/ruck where he’s played his role very well. That’s all I want to see is him playing his role. If he carries on like this for the rest of his career then I’ll be happy to see him in the red and black in the future.

Loved his last few weeks. Ive been on to his tap work but there has been a more thoughtful approach to it lately. There is improvement in Sammy. Im not sure about the around the body kicking for goal but if it means he is finding composure and it works for him good on him.
Along with Bryan it would seem that our ruck stocks are the least of our problems.

The most pleasing thing I have seen at Essendon in the dismal back half of the year is that Sammy had a problem with close range goal kicking, so he developed, rehearsed, and executed a plan for it.

It is so rare to see an Essendon player do that.

yep good to see him kick around the body like stevie J.

Just making the simple things easy like kicking a goal from 10m out is pleasing.

He is a aerial threat up forward. but he does usually bring ball to ground so will be good for Kako and Davey next year.

How did he go up forward last night?

It’ll be interesting to see if that ends up his main position. I really doubt he can be a consistent forward

I don’t think he will ever have consistent stats, he just won’t ever have the forward craft for that.

I do think he can be consistently competitive in marking contests, which sometimes is enough.

How’s that going to work when he’s on the other side on the other side of the goals

Yes agree. He’s far more competitive than two meeker

I thought there was a touch of the soccer goalkeeper about it.

Which is an action he’d know well.

If he can develop one plan, then he can manage a second.

Only if you have actual legit small forward(s).

He genuinely does not give a fk who is between him and the ball. Opponent, teammate, doesn’t matter - he goes at it full throttle.

Now, please Essendon, make sure he stays on the park. No more starting to find form/confidence then an “ohh, he’s out for the next eight weeks”.
