#2 Big Sammy Draper (from May 2024)

Not what people are complaining about, happy he’s signing

Play of the night was when he came from 3 deep to crash a pack of Cats defenders and create a spillage for Kako’s 4th goal. That wasn’t a flashy play, it was just being a big physical presence and making a contest. Something we sorely need. He was brilliant tonight and as the Fox boys said, his physical conditioning looks impressive.

100%.

Defenders will crap themselves.

When was the last time we had someone who could do that?

We’ll have to take the good with the bad with him but the ride will be fun.

He does look incredibly fit.

He has a level of ability where if he produces his best for 15 rounds, he’ll be an AA ruck. There is nobody else with his size who can match his athletic profile.

But he needs to stay on the park and produce it. Big ifs.

And that’s why he will play forward and Wright will play VFL

I can’t think of a premiership team with a cult figure like tall that can be equal parts brilliant and frustrating. By Joe it has never happened before.

That spoil to set up the Kako goal. His tap work all night. His current condition.

All excellent. Nice one, Drapes.

I must say, it’s nice to read some positives about Draper. If he has a bad game, no doubt there be people who are ready to ship him off to Adelaide but only for the ‘best’ picks.

Who’s got the gif of him crushing those three cats?

Two things I loved about that. Big fella having a presence and crashing a pack - something that we haven’t seen from 2MP, and Kako being front and square to pick up the crumbs…something we haven’t seen for 5 years.

He’s a huge loss, we gave him up for nothing and there isn’t anyone else on the team to replace him.
He was valued by a flag contender
Yet some people on here seem to be happy in a perpetual rebuild mode where if we have anyone half decent we must trade them out for picks that may or may not become a player.
Look at the cats they have stayed on top by keeping their good players.
I seriously don’t get the blind faith in Brad and co to get it right when he never has done previously and he’s an AFL plant.

If he can play like he did vs Geelong for 4 out of every 5 games he will change my mind on him
Was very good but I’ll need to see it consistently before I’m sold
Hoping he does cos when he’s on he can be a game changer as we have already seen

he’s not

NO HE ISNT.

Last 3 years we’ve been sh*t with him.
In his best year we got smashed in the Elim Final.
What are we losing exactly ?

The guy can play on a good day, but how many good years, heck…how many good games does he have left ?
Also, what message does it send young players when Stringer consistently presents out of shape ?

Brad’s made a bundle of mistakes.
Not this though.

Go to 18:45 of the first quarter. 90 seconds into the match, neither side has scored. Drapes takes possession by laying a hard and low bump on Atkins near the Geelong forward flank. You can see Atkins grimacing.

Anyway, he wins the 50-50 that 30 seconds later results in our first goal. Take nothing away from the other boys involved in that play but that’s Draper’s goal. Superb bit of footy.

Looks in really really good nick, 25 HO while sharing duties is also really good, hes never really been elite with his HO numbers.

Think 6 years is 2 to many, but i guess thats the market nowadays, only 26 so if fit should get his entire prime with this next deal.

Stringer will be out of the GWS starting line up by mid year. At the end of the day, he can’t be bothered and Kingsley isn’t gonna gift him games like he had with us.

Whatever happens happens.
Whether his fitness goes south and he gets dropped, or he kicks 50, it should have zero bearing on what we’re doing.

Of course, you can’t convince certain posters on this site.
Supposedly we need to keep all our Best 23 players on the terms the player wants, all for the glorification of finishing 12th !

I thought the Cats midfield got on top and were winning more clearances when Draper was not rucking (escpecially that 2nd qtr).

But I do like the 2 ruckman set up.

The last few seconds were the most Draper thing ever.
Man, I laughed.
