#2 Big Sammy Draper (from May 2024)

I don’t care that he kicks for goal sideways. I don’t care that he lacks polish, even for someone of his position. He is or at least will be a very good ruckman.

But the same could be said about Bryan. Maybe Vigo, too. Which renders Sammy surplus needs.

Take the FA first rounder and fill the holes in our list.

Not sure why so many are keen to push him out the door.
Even if we got a first round compensation for a shiny new toy, we would be lacking an effective ruckman. I think Sam has been showing a new maturity this year and has been performing well. Have people forgotten how much we missed him early last year when he was injured and we had to rely on Goldstein?

Couldn’t agree more. He’s got improvement to go, but he can rip a game up. We’d be throwing away a real asset

Hes a keeper for mine, best years are ahead of him.

Keep him. Parish is the one that shouldve been let go, but thats in the past and for another thread.
Unless Sammy wants to go, he stays. He’s our spiritual leader, and our only enforcer.

As a ruckman he can be replaced if you get an opportunity to get absolute top end talent for him you have to consider it.

I’m interested in how he is going to go more as a ruck\forward across a whole season… It’s a massive weapon to have in the arsenal, if he can average about 2 goals a game, and bring the smalls into the game, and potentially still be a big factor in the ruck…
We need to see how Bryan holds up over the season too in terms of durability (form-wise I reckon he is looking good). I see VV more as a forward/ruck potentially, as is 2MPeewee obviously, and Gerreyne too. With Goldy deep into the sunset, it’s an area that we’d need to cover via trade if we did trade Drapes.

Yes, if let Sam go we’d be lacking an effective ruckman… for now.

We competing for a flag next year? Hell no. Year after? I guess it’s possible. And by then, the promising and still only 23 Nick Bryan will have had nearly two more years of development.

It comes down to where you wanna use Draper’s currency. You could keep him as a ruck. Certainly not a bad idea. Or we address more urgent gaps in the list and alleviate the recurring issue of playing too tall.

What a player he was

I’m all for keeping him if his output is 2 goals a game for the next 6 years.

I’m scared we give him the 6 year deal and we don’t see the Draper we see in 2025 ever again.

I understand you need to take the leap of faith and hope you get the professional heart and soul Sammy for the rest of his career, the long term deals we’ve handed out recently makes it hard to trust I guess.

No player is worth 6 years.

IDGAF if that means we miss out on a superstar free agent. Stuff changes. Form can fluctuate. Injuries occur. Way too risky.

5 maybe depending on the player. Generally, 4 year deals are long enough. If a player isn’t prepared to sign for ‘only’ 4 or 5 years then the emotional buy-in to the club isn’t enough, which serves as a screening process and filters out those we don’t need.

I think most would agree. But…in the real world, the best players are getting these long term deals. If we arent prepared to gamble on long terms deals we won’t be able to attract or retain the best players. Sentitment and buy-in doesn’t win you games of footy.

**this isn’t a comment on Draper, more a general comment.

My god Riley Obrien looks cooked tonight.

Think Geelong have 6 goals from centre bounces.

No doubt they’ll be making a big offer for Draper. A clear missing piece for them

We wont get a pick straight after our pick Im guessing, might have to just match Adelaides off and negotiate a better trade than an end of 1st round pick.

He’s not leaving you flog

ROB made Stanley look like an all time great tonight. He was absolute toilet tonight. Nicks will be doubling that offer to Draper.

Because they wouldn’t have the brains to come in from the rain.

Funny, Sam Draper is not good enough according to some but he is the ‘missing piece’ for Adelaide. How does that work? (I guess it’s the old story: someone is ‘not good enough’ for us, yet we expect high draft picks for him because he’s just what the opposition want.)

We want a high draft pick for him because if he leaves it’ll be via free agency.

Given Bryan’s progress, he’s surplus. Take the top ten pick for him and fill a list hole
