Long has shown something at AFL level and unless I’m having a senior moment Merrett was building nicely in the back end of the year until he broke his leg. They’re young and talented, and to a degree ‘modern’ footballers, I’m going bright side on this one. I hate having to use Richmond as an example but Blitz would’ve delisted half that team at the start of the year. Consummate plodders indeed

Is the new draftee mandatory contract really 2 years? I vaguely remember Hartley being signed on a 1 year deal when drafted and then having it extended at the end of the last year.
Can be one year if they’re 23+ or have been on an AFL list before

It might be different for players who have been on an AFL list before and are re-nominating? Just guessing on that one. AFAIK it is mandatory 2 year contract for ND picks.
I said at the back end of the season that I’d be giving 1 year deals to Jerret and Long before I’d be taking late picks in the draft based on their upside vs picks very late.
As it turns out our picks are even later than I anticipated when I suggested it so in the end it was a no brainer

Absolutely ridiculous decision.
I generally agree with all of the clubs list management decisions, and am a strong advocate of the club when it comes to those who think we are poor at it.
But this one… it is staggering.

We should just draft superstars with every pick and then we wont have these types of problems
That’s a terrible idea!
If we did that then we would have to delist superstars. Or have superstarts retire every year. Also think of our salary cap issues. All our players would take Brownlow votes off each other.

A 1 year contract makes sense to me. He has been in the system a while so his body is AFL ready, he knows the EFC drills and team mates, is a beautiful kick at goal (one of the best at the club) and just needs to find the ball more. Not everyone is a gun at his age. I still see some up side and if he can’t break into the team in 2018 we haven’t lost much. Jarrett or a very late pick in the draft? I’m taking Jerrett.

With the rookie draft, you effectively do.
Normally 2-4 rounds of live picks in the rookies + 3-5 rounds of live picks in the main draft.
