2016-17 List changes

Sorry if this has been covered before. List space at the end if 2017 is going to be crazy difficult to manage.

Why?

I am assuming a big cut this year.

Out
Kommer, Edwards, mcKernan, gwilt, ashby, pears, Cooney, Hibberd, Dempsey

In
Kelly, Dea, Walla
Picks 1, 19, 26, 37, 55
PSD 1

2017
In - 2 rookies
So next year we have Hams, Long, McKenna who all have to be listed or let go. Let’s say 2 stay on (sorry Hams fans - I’m a fan too)
Also, Rnd 1, 2 and 3 at a minimum. So that’s 5 ins next year.

Who are the 5 outs? List of candidates include;

  • jerret
  • Howlett
  • Hocking
  • Stanton
  • Kelly (likely)
  • Brown
  • Ambrose
  • Eases
  • Morgan
  • Goddard
  • Bird

Competition for spots is gonna be immense. Kelly is the only one who would be satisfied to finish up. Another 4 from that group would need to go. Very tough calls to be made.

Even though it’s a deep and even draft I would be happier to trade down (say 26&37 for 15) into the draft even if it is a little disadvantageous so we could carry an extra ruck ala mcKernan and give yourself extra flex next year. So we should try and only take 4 draftees this year IMO.

Alternatively we could take more this year by trading pick 37 and next years first rndr for pick 6, 7 or 8 from GWS or GC. That way we only take 2 national draft picks next year but take higher quality this draft hence only needing to cut 4 from the above list.

Very tricky for jackets next year.

I wouldn’t worry about 2017.

Every year the list looks ok at the start of the year. And every year the blokes heading out the door become more obvious as the season progresses.

It isn’t often we lose someone that is a complete surprise.

Will we wait until VFL finals are over before we announce delistments?
I notice some clubs have already announced some of their delistment/retirements

It’s a bit of a tough list change over this year.

Allot will depend on what available in the trade period and what picks we end up with. If we do swap for multiple first rounders I think we will then not delist as many, take 2-3 tops telent and work with the rest.

Zaka will be awesome once Hepps, Watto, Stants, Colyer and Hocking are back.

What if he isnt. What happens if has has another great stretch of 6-8 games next year then is awful for the majority of the rest of the games?

Pretty sure he is on the last year of his contract next season, could end up getting a hell of a lot less if we get rid of him next trade period

I highly doubt it would be tearing the fabric of the club if we traded him. He isnt even in the leadership group

If he does the same as this year, it’d be somewhat disappointing, you know 5th in the Crichton and behind only Zach as a midfielder, while being the one who copped the majority of tagging…

He could have been better. No doubt. But his “majority of the rest of the year” being as poor as you depict is revisionist $#%^. He had a 10 game patch in which 6 games were very poor. 4 games in there were actually pretty useful. And then he returned to very consistent good form at the end. But you don’t want to know that as it doesn’t fit your view…

I think you do have to give thought to 2017. Its part of the reason I think McKenna will be promoted this year, and McKernan probably given another year.

If we do what I suggested earlier (quoted below so people don’t have to go back to page 1), we would have 4 picks + Kelly/Dea/Walla/McKenna promoted. We would then still have as eligible to be delisted in 2017 and likely to be in the gun: Jerrett, McKernan, Gwilt, Kelly, Howlett

You also of course have Eades, Morgan, and one or two more established players coming out of contract.

As far as 2017 rookie upgrades go, as I have Hams being delisted this year it means only Long is in the “promote or delist” group next year.

So I don’t think its as big an issue as mentioned. I personally doubt we’ll use #55 or the PSD. Just the four picks listed below.

My view:

Senior List
Out: Hibberd, Pears, Kommer, Ashby, Edwards, Dempsey, Cooney, spare slot
In: Dea, Walla, McKenna, Kelly, #1, #19, ~#27, #37,

Rookie List
Out: Walla (promoted), Hams, McKenna (promoted)
In: Heppell or Holmes

Mckernan kept for depth.
Not sure on Gwilt.
If Pears chooses to stay it makes things tight.

Holmes is an animal. I’m friends with one of the VFL trainers and she was telling me the coaching staff had to tell him to tone his own personal program down about 5 notches. Just works his ringer off apparently. Would love him as a rookie selection.

Goodbye James Gwilt. Thankyou for some good service during hard times.

My prediction was wrong awfully quickly.

So, official positions:

Senior List
Out: Cooney, Gwilt
In: Walla
Still has spare senior spot

Rookie List
Out: Walla
In:

Holmes.

Wasn’t sure where to put this, but it does reflect on our previous list management, and the fact that we have let a couple of potentially good ruckmen/forwards slip through our fingers, which you would agree are precious commodities.

Jonathan Giles tearing it up our West !!!

Who’d a thunk it.

I can’t help but wonder what going on last year with not playing him for ages???

We were crying out for a ruckman to take the game on, and went with the undersized but plucky Smack. This got him into the top if the 10 B & F, which even Leuy couldn’t do this year. In the meantime Giles was languishing in the twos. Did the penny only drop for him this year, or we did we do a terrible job last year of getting the best out of him.

I love James, but I thought he seemed to make players wait for a couple more weeks after they were needed and/or had seemed to have earned their spots.

We probably need one more ruck option and have to seriously wonder if that should be Smack, but can we develop one who is close to maturity. I do wonder if we should go for Daw and see if Jamar can teach him a bit of mongrel and also help Gach to bridge the gap next year too.

Hird thought the 3 ruck approach was a failure he’d moved to a 1 or 0 ruck approach.

Will we wait until VFL finals are over before we announce delistments? I notice some clubs have already announced some of their delistment/retirements
Is that a word?

Obviously we won’t delist somebody that is still playing for our VFL team

Jamar, Sam Michael and Polkinghorne kind of know it is coming.

Giles wasn’t exactly bashing the door down in the VFL either FWIW.

Seemed pretty good each time I saw him play.

Heavy tags brought Zaka down in his possession rate, not his work rate. He is a gun outside mid, and very likely not going to be tagged at all next year. Look for 25-30 possession, 2-3 goal games on the regular next year.

tick tock. been waiting about 5 years for this to magically happen. hasnt even gotten close

I reckon Woosha likes guys with abit of ticker as well. He is one loose unit on the park. He’s one very angry bloke on the footy field, and doesn’t hold back.

Get him on the rookie list, before the Bulldogs take another one of our VFL players.

He averaged 24.86 disposals this year…

Have a go at saying something nice about the Bombers. Go on, I dare you.

Zaka has done well this year in a role that probably isn’t his first preference. Yeah, he didn’t find enough of the ball when he was tagged but when he was off the leash he certainly did and his contested work was as good as it’s ever been. He’ll rotate forward more next season which should be interesting to see how the experience of this season goes around the contests around our 50 arc. Reckon he is set to have a good season next year and do some damage on the score board as well.
