2021 Draft Watch

Until you see “someone else’s name”, right?

My guess is Essendon don’t see Rachele left on the board at our first pick. Hence the very pointed ‘we don’t see any small forwards available at our pick’ by Dodoro.

Exactly.

There is a big difference between “we don’t want a small forward” and “we don’t think there will be a small forward available at our pick”.

Don’t get your hopes up to high. You are on track for some serious heart break.

You can’t break what is already broken.

A potential draft bolter, Willis is a burst midfielder/forward with elite speed and agility but has a great contested game and a willing tackler.

Yes I can. You can break it more.

What he said in the interview I heard (apologies if there’s another one I haven’t heard), when asked if we’d use our first round pick on small forward, was

“Quick scan of the draft pool, don’t think so. To be honest, I don’t think there’s one that we would take that early.”

Sure, maybe that means “I don’t think there’s one we’d take that early assuming the ones we would take that early have already been taken” but what he said out loud was there weren’t any small forwards we’d take that early.

It’s all a bit irrelevant because I assume he’s hedging and/or straight up lying. But he didn’t say “available at our pick”.

That’s because Dodoro sees every kid as a “can play midfield” type.

Just looking at those Combine results and I question who the well performed Corey Warner is.

Obviously he’s some sort of athlete but doesn’t appear to be in the top twenty of phantom drafts, so figure he may not be very good at footballing.

Imagine naming your kids Corey and Chad.

POSITION: Balanced Midfielder

SNAPSHOT: Warner is a hard running midfielder who can play both inside and out, breaking forward with purpose and a penetrating left-foot kick.”

There is another ‘C. Warner’ running around in Western Australia, this time of the Corey variety after elder brother Chad was drafted to Sydney in 2019. The hard running midfielder skippered Aquinas College in the PSA football competition this year, while also cracking WAFL League level for four-consecutive games with East Fremantle. He then returned to the Sharks’ Colts side and was a key figure in their run to the preliminary final, providing plenty of run and willing his side forward in big moments. Able to play on either side of midfield, Warner is most often utilised on the wing and featured there for Western Australia’s Under 19s, capping off a strong season where he showed great potential across all competitions. He was also a standout draft combine performer, notching state-high scores in the 2km time trial (6:20), standing vertical jump (76cm), and running vertical jump (100cm).

STRENGTHS:

  • Endurance
  • Run and carry
  • Kick penetration
  • Inside-outside balance
  • Burst

IMPROVEMENTS:

– Kick efficiency

Nope. Too same same size and skill is questionable.

I can’t see Erasmus getting past Freo (6&8) or WCE (10) - lazy state based recruiting bias from me, I know - but Cal Twomey has mentioned him to Essendon a few times in the last week. Twombstone is the man who gets the goss, so perhaps there’s something there. You know, smoke and fire and all that.

On SEN today he said the Dons “should be looking hard at Neil Erasmus.” Suggests that he thinks he’s a chance to be available to us at 11 (13 after bids).

I don’t want to get my hopes up too high, but this is what I’m crossing my fingers for. I ran through a mock draft today and it’s conceivable that Murley and Fejo Jnr are also available to us at our two third rounders.

While unlikely, a draft haul of Erasmus, Murley and Fejo Jnr would go a long way towards adding talent and needs in the one go.

What do you think about this @THE_DON1 - from both a likelihood and good for us perspective?

Warner sounds like a viable option with one of our thirds.

I agree Erasmus sounds like a great prospect and fit, and it seems weird if he isn’t taken by a WA team.

I think Amiss & Van Rooyen are the other 2 aswell.

Both Fremantle and West Coast are desperate to top up their KP stocks.

Erasmus might get through.

The SA & WA clubs will be looking to get kids from their own state atm, with the Covid uncertainty and Vic kids unable to see their family.

I don’t think Murley drifting that late is likely but would be rapt to get him, injury might have cost him a likely top 25 selection in the draft. Erasmus would be a good get but is a better chance than Murley would be at 51 or so.

I know it’s hard to predict but given bidding what do you think 51 may come into? 45 or so?
