Freo absolutely knew how valuable the first pick of the second draft night would be - especially with such an even top end of talent - which is what they would’ve been weighing up with the Brodie deal.
An interesting discussion around essentially ‘buying’ a high draft pick IMO, which is what I was hoping we’d be able to do this trade/draft period, given our desire to improve our draft hand (and at a time where we’ve got oodles of spare salary cap).
They either end up with a bloke they were considering at pick 8, or they trade it for a king’s ransom. Very clever by them.

Here’s the VFL goal kickers list. Good news is there are heaps of sub 190cm guys younger than 25 in the top ten. The bad news is they are all failed previously delisted guys e.g Begley

Only my opinion but I reckon small forward is only valuable if they are elite, vast majority don’t make it. At any point in time you have half a dozen truely good small forwards and another ten that go ok in a good system. It’s a hard role to play. Doubt you find anyone in the minor leagues.

this draft was very deep & very even between pick 15 - pick 40.
The belief that ‘if a player was projected to go early second round and slid back 20 picks, then they mustn’t be very good’…… it’s simply wrong.

Good news. Can we also ask Preston and Stretch? Then get Moore and Wanganeen participating, and use SSP on the two best.
You find some pretty fit buggers running around in the minors.
I’m not saying you’re going to find suitable players all over the place, but I do think you’d be able to find One.

little bit surprised Fejo didnt get rookied looking at his highlights again, maybe concerns about him developing an AFL frame? has great agility could just sidestep any wannabe tackler.
Preston was 19.
I’d add Grintell to the list of guys who should be asked to train.

Trainees?
- Stretch, Preston and Grintell as all three are small forwards who got combine invites. All three read like decent options.
- Fejo as seems to fit needs
- Wanganeen and Moore as fit needs, builds community and the links to the club

You would think with our drafting neither Clarke or Gleeson would be a chance.
