He got done for drink driving in April, and they kept him. Then he got caught with an illicit substance in September, and they kept him. Then he got photographed with an illicit substance again in December and they dumped him. Asking someone to stay off the gear for three months, or at the very least do it discreetly is a pretty low bar to set for a professional footballer.

I am amazed that people think drafting Stengel is worth the risk. The risk management strategy here is pretty obvious…do not draft!

Of course. But in this case it is a high profile football club that probably would not appreciate the media attention and backlash that would come with another lapse from Stengel.

Majority of people’s workplaces do not replicate this.

Why?

Because from some reports he isn’t doing ok (or at the very least hasn’t proven he IS doing ok). And while Essendon is a very conservative club, football clubs often know much more than the general public. So given his history and rumours it not surprising.

He is doing ok.

Oh… this is awkward. Ummm…

People deserve a chance in life.

Sure. But this doesn’t mean they deserve to jump straight back to where they were previously. If he has really changed he will have plenty of opportunities to prove it. This line seems to often be deployed by those who want other to overlook or disregard something, usually for the formers benefit. Sure he deserves another chance but that doesn’t mean it should just be handed to him.
