2022 Draft Watch (Part 2)

That draft was missing a third of the players who would previously have been eligible as they changed the minimum age by 4 months.

Melksham, Carlisle and Colyer wasn’t a bad outcome. I still think Melksham was developed poorly and should have had more midfield opportunities.

When Jobe was out and he played in the centre against an unbeaten Geelong, he had a great game, culminating in kicking the sealer. Not enough opportunities in there, and we’ve heard that song before.

“Doesn’t have the tank to play midfield”

Adelaide traded pick 23 for North’s 59 and future 2nd.

If we did that trade, we would have the equivalent of around 950 points on draft night after the two Brisbane bids (hard to determine the exact value). That’s enough points to match Davey outright at pick 19

In theory, we could trade a future 3rd for a bunch of points to get us more points/picks if we thought we needed them. Hawks and GWS have a few later picks they’d likely not use on draft.

But seems like we think the bid will come after 22 anyway

I’ve already forgotten Weideman is on our list and I wake up most nights in a cold sweat thinking that Munkara had been drafted at 39 soooooooo…

If it happens, Weideman will go directly to whipping boy status.

Sorry, I read that incorrectly and was wrong. You’re right, North got the extra points.

However, #59 doesn’t move the dial much and we’d still have the issue that a bid before (say) 25 would mean a deficit carried forward.

Even if we delisted Eyre and did that trade we would only be able to match a bid at 21. Keeping Eyre it would be 24. And leave nothing/little for later matching.

Whereas I think if you trade an ‘active’ pick on the night you get the full points even if 2 or 3 picks for one ( @SplitRound ?).

Also Fletcher might be bid on after Davey. They’ve been frequently ranked similarly.

Was that that draft?

I had a distinct memory it was one of the GC/GWS drafts, 2010 or 2011. Maybe 2011, that was an all time stinker.

2009 - changed age requirements
2010 - GCS enter
2011 - GWS enter
2012 & 2013 - GWS mini drafts

They changed the age minimum in 2009 so that you had to turn 18 in the year of the draft. So the 2009 17 year olds were too young, and a bunch guys who would have been eligible in 09 got taken in 08 instead (Watts, Shiels, Hannebery, Ziebell, Sidebottom, Jones, Motlop, Walters, a few others).

The 2010 and 2011 drafts were, separately, missing a whole bunch of players who got pre-listed as 17 year olds by the suns and giants respectively (which is why guys like Jeremy Cameron and Dylan Shiel never got drafted per se).

I think you’re right, but I’m not 100% sure. Still a bit loopholey, but someone’s got to go into the draft intending to use the pick, so less abusable.

A Max Holmes trade.

I’m lost, what has this got to do with Eyre?

I already have him earmarked for that exact thing!

What about Heppell.
Lose captaincy and whipping boy status.

Then continue to punish us after using us as a scapegoat: ban EFC from first round picks.

You can only use picks to match that you have list spots for.

That said, I’d probably have taken that deal. We could potentially have traded our 2023 third for a pick with enough points to cover the deficit.

I would be the same, but there may be someone we like at 24 and there’s always value to getting a kid in the door a year early.

But giving Scott one year to look over the list and entering the 2023 offseason with 3 top 25 picks would be a pretty good position to be in.

We don’t have the list spots to take someone at 22 and Walla and Munkara (unless he slips to Cat B).

A lot of people don’t understand the clubs situation with list spots.

Especially when you had people saying that we should pick up random delisted players, because they cost nothing.
