This is what should happen but wont
This is a problem
Not if he stays on the senior list. I reckon we need 5 or 6 open spots.
Iām more than happy to part ways with him.
But the situation has to be either:
- Delist/Retire him and we trade or draft in a ruckman physically capable of being called upon to play at AFL level when required (break glass in case of emergency)
OR
- He stays and it is clearly defined that he is basically what Tom Campbell has been at the Saints. Heād have to be comfortable with being essentially a playing ruck coach in the VFL who only gets the odd game here and there. Needs to be written in stone that he is the number 3 seed behind Draper and Bryan. If Brad and he canāt commit to this, then he needs to go.
Him going around next year and playing a heap of footy at AFL level while Bryan barely plays any, serves no purpose.
I donāt think that would be an issue for me
Agree with all of that apart from Goldstein.
a) apart from Zerrett, we should be trading the midfielder that gives us the biggest return.
If thatās Hobbs, fine. If thatās Parish, fine.
b) we need a genuine, gun, fully franked superstar small forward.
Just get him. Enough with the messing around.
c) if GS wants to coach, then let him coach. He canāt be on our list next year.
Replace him with someone, anyone, 10-15 years younger.
Why on earth would we want to trade out any of them anyway?
If heās happy to play VFL, put him in the VFL list.
Rayner is a freak talent but he certainly isnāt a small forward.
Call him what you will.
Iāll take his 25.13 this year.
Heās not Langford or Stringer.
No, no.
And no.
Like a dog returning to its vomit, Midtable Brad has demonstrated time and time again that he will play the likes of Goldstein and Heppell et al as long as that option is available.
That temptation for him must be forcibly removed.
You mean we could bounce up into the stratisphere?
Just thinking on isaac kako, genuinely think he shouldnāt be the only option we look at for next year. We should be looking at potential trade options that arenāt getting much game time, can give us immediate impact and are young enough to improve in the small forward role. Hawks were fortunate enough to get both watson and ginnivan last year. Thinking options like konstanty or connor stone just as names, but we definitely need to address this area in the offseason. Itās promising as well weāre prioritising both perryman and cumming to address the half back deficiencies.
Yep - tried for Lohmann last year and would have been a great get if we pulled it off.
Need to look through previous drafts of young small forwards not getting a crack like Konstanty.
I would also very much look to take another small forward with our pick 10-12 in addition to Kako.
Small forwards that bring pressure and can go up and down the ground are the modern game and we have a lot of strengths as a team but this itās a gaping hole for us. Kako helps to partner Gresham but we need another.
Because aside from Caddy, none of them Iād consider off limits in terms of trade proposals:
Perkins - Regressed in 2024, dropped to the VFL. Good player but whatās his ceiling?
Cox - Four seasons in and still doesnāt have a position in the team that he can call his own.
Reid - Does he even exist? 9 AFL games in 4 seasons. Have to make list management decisions as if heās not there.
Hobbs - Can play but canāt get a game.
Tsatas - Can find the footy but has the worst foot skills Iāve ever seen.
The list is horribly bereft in just about every area of the field. We have tradable assets, including players more experienced and credentialed than the above. We should not be afraid of making hard calls if it ultimately is within the best interests of the club.
Goldstein has only played 3 games since round 12.*
Heppell has been dropped twice in 3 weeks.
I donāt disagree with the premise that he selects senior players too much when their form is ordinary.
*3 more games than I would have played him in that period, but nonetheless.
tbh there seriously isnāt that many, like at all
the problem with that is, if the young kids you were looking for, that were doing the things you want (which i agree should be a focus) theyād be getting a game already, so at this stage they arenāt doing it, and probably wouldnāt be getting a walk up start at this club either.
small forwards are a need no doubt, but how many do you want that arenāt getting a game ?
next year youāll have 2 x daveys, kako and you want to add another kid who most likely woudlntā be getting a look in in scotts eyes above and beyond others like guelfi, perkin, hind and co who are getting games now or thorughout the year.
I dont think our midfield is bereft at all.
I think you yourself just perfectly explained why its actually the opposite.
A midfield rotation of Merrett, Parish, Caldwell, Durham, and Hobbs/Shiel/Tsatas is not lacking.
Backs are missing a piece or two and same goes for forward line which will hopefully be addressing with Kako.
I think this current list has potential to be special in another 2 years time.
Rayner comes from an Essendon supporting family and grew up idolising Matthew Lloyd (as I and many other blitzers did I suspect). Probably means nothing but would be a great acquisition for the club.
