2023 into 2024 trade talk (Part 4)

Lohmann wasnt getting a game last year and he was close to leaving. Look at him this year.

That logic is flawed because it’s more nuanaced than that. If the kid is playing in a team high on the ladder with other options then they are unlikely to get a game unless they are absolutely elite.

Toby Bedford another great example for GWS that wasnt getting a game for the Dees. These players are out there, they just need an opportunity and our team is crying out for players like this.

So you don’t think these players are good, but we’ll get good currency to use on better players. Somehow.

This doesn’t seem very realistic.

More Stringer than Langford

I guess in working the ground ball, for mine, but I’m interested in hearing you expand.

Some will have greater interest and value than others. But we shouldn’t be afraid of trading any of them if the deal was right and it benefitted the football club by addressing the many areas of need within our list, namely:

  • Small forwards
  • Pace and skills, in the midfield and across HB
  • Dynamic/power/explosive midfielders
  • Key defensive stocks
  • Key forward stocks
  • Ruck support

Explosiveness and strength

He played for Doutta stars so likely grew up in Essendon too.

I thought he was from Keilor way but Doutta Stars is right in the heart of Essendon proper.

What if the players we draft are not as good or better then the ones we traded?

The draft is too much of a lottery to bank on imo

Then sack the recruiters and try again. Keeping the same players will get you the same result

Apart from the obvious ones who need to go ie; Hep,Shiel etc there really isn’t much left on the list to turn over.

There was a stat where we have turned over 30 players in the last 4-5 years that’s a lot

not enough imo. we have plenty of average joe’s, more than you shoud have on a list. We need to find the next elite players, can only do that by turning over and trading. Need to take some chances, if it means we go down for a period then so be it, it is far better we do that than linger in no man 's land.

Which is what the club is doing is it not

There’s plenty IMO if you want to be super objective and also proactive in terms of transforming this list.

Retirements/Delistings - Uncontracted for 2025

Heppell
Goldstein
Weideman
Wanganeen
Hind
Baldwin
Hunter
Setterfield
Kelly
A.Davey (although I see he may be contracted for 2025, according to one list I’ve seen?)
J.Davey

Trade Bait

Shiel
Stringer
Bryan
Perkins
Hobbs
Tsatas (although re-signed this season)
Cox (although re-signed this season)
Guelfi
Jones
Redman
Wright

That’s about half the list you could potentially delist or have involved in trade discussions. Of course there’s no way you’re getting rid of all those in the one off-season, but if you delist 3/4 of the guys named there and trade even 2-3 of the trade bait there’s 10+ list changes, if you were so inclined. Unfortunately we are very, very conservative in how we approach these things so I anticipate we will run it back next season with minimal change…

Can’t argue with any of those.

It doesn’t surprise me one bit. Taking away the off-field baggage, he’s an elite level talent you can get for nothing. Provided he isn’t banned from doing so by the AFL, I expect he will be on an AFL list come 2025…

Lol saints love signing a ticking time bomb.

And Saints fans are already justifying it by saying everything he’s done is low-level stuff and he’s misunderstood.
