2023 Mid Season Draft - Wednesday May 31 2023

We don’t need midfield depth. We can’t play all the midfielders we have anyway. We won a game on Saturday with an entire AFL-standard midfield rotation, and a top 5 draft pick midfielder, all sitting in the medical room ffs. Picking up a 26yo mid who isn’t setting the world on fire in the VFL seems like a very weird call. Would you play Narkle ahead of Hobbs, or Durham, or even Tsatas?

If we’re talking about using the MSD to boost our depth, how about we look for a stopgap key forward instead?

Difficult that probably the two we would want to keep the least, Stewart and Hind, both have contracts for 2024.

Stewart I would pay out. Hind I suspect will be chopped off the main list and rookied, just to get a pick a bit earlier.
Massimo no certainty.

4 or 5 picks for the main list.

It’s not like we’re going to be massively culling the rookie list though either, so casually dropping blokes to the rookie list isn’t exactly easy. Baldwin has to be upgraded if we want to keep him, but other than him there’s no obvious auto-delists. Montgomerie maaaybe the closest, but jeez, he’s only a first year player. Mass played some really good AFL footy last year and looks to me like he’s basically just til he’s bulked up a bit to take Hind’s spot. Menzie is going nowhere, neither is Munkara or Voss, and that only leaves Tex. Without being on the inside at all, or knowing what the internal expectations/goals/metrics are, I could see a plausible scenario in which the club doesn’t want to delist any of these guys. I suspect someone will end up getting the chop anyway, but we’re hardly going to have a major cleanout.

I feel like we say that every year but we end up with 10 new faces anyway.

A lot of deckchair shuffling.

There’ll be some surprise trades no doubt as well, who knows The Prince of Perth might get a solid offer from WC

The AFL really needs to expand list sizes again to what they were, there are numerous clubs struggling to field competitive reserves sides after copping only a handful of injuries, especially with the silly VFL salary cap.

Ideally we draft a ruck/forward. If we can’t then maybe another FF. We have plenty of mids, defenders and smalls for mine.

Someone who’s good at footballing particularly a crafty (not necessarily small) forward who knows where the goals are and loves a snag! Someone not bad overhead, elusive, has pace and doesn’t mind getting into their opponents.

I don’t think we go for a tall defender. We have so many developing on the list, and Laverde is apparently ahead of schedule anyway. I also don’t think we need another pure mid on the list - especially from the MSD talent pool.

Maybe some genuine-wing depth? I reckon we were a bit exposed when Durham was suspended, and someone like Setterfield had to fill in on the wing. Or perhaps we could look at small defender depth. I don’t think we have great cover, if guys like McGrath or Kelly are off the park.

Some more pressure role-players also wouldn’t go astray - maybe we could find someone who’d be an upgrade on Snelling?

Do we look at another developing ruck/forward? Or is that something we should look to address in the trade period (perhaps De Koning?)

I also think our list is also crying out for a genuine small forward, and to a lesser extent, another powerful mid/forward in the Stringer mold. But I think players of this type are probably something we’d need to find in the first round of the national draft, or during the trade period.

Hell no. We have seen his best and it is actually fairly ordinary.

I couldn’t care who we get, as long as he’s built like a brick shithouse and tough as teak. We need an enforcer. Thanks to the Dodo.

I’m still on this bandwagon. Was one of the 11 for medical testing, so on the radar of clubs. Video on AFL site looks great. Good size, moves well, looks like a footballer.

Luke Teal is still my dream selection, able to play on small or mid FWDs, extremely good kick and decision maker (something our backline lacks), numbers are good against talent league but a touch light on in the VFL for rich.

Can see him being able to also play wing once he grows the tank , being 190cm is a good size for marking between the 50s.

An upgrade on Lord and a different type of back to what we have currently

I just don’t think much will be available at our pick. We’ll see

Possibly mother went in to labour due to that first finals loss, so maybe he is the chosen one to bring balance to the world and heal the curse

You could be right. I wouldn’t be surprised if we passed if the player we want is off the board.

Disco will be lining up the next nic martin.

Or the next Garrett McDonough
