2023 trade talk (Part 3)

The suggestion that Shiel will offer more as a forward because he has speed is mind boggling. The exact reason our forward line sucks, no one has any idea where the big middle sticks are other than Langford, Wright and Menzie. Two of those are playing as key forwards.

I am not convinced Gresh is an upgrade on Menzie. There isn’t enough evidence to form an informed opinion, mainly because Menzie hasn’t been around for that long.

putting shiel half forward is simply the old essendon way of trying to squeeze in a bunch of midfielders who they believe shouldnt play vfl and thus must play somewhere in the seniors

We have a bunch of midfielders that we try squeeze on half forward that simply can’t play the role. Hobbs, Caldwell and Shiel have all played this role. I can cop one of them at worst playing the role, but as other teams have shown, you need specialist small forwards who are quick, crafty in front of goals, and love to tackle. Not midfielders who the club are scared of playing in the vfl

He is unequivocally an upgrade on Snelling and Guelf. Maybe not on Menzie, but its not mutually exclusive. We can play both.

Dang, you got me there haha

Interesting . I thought before his injury that Shiel looked fairly dangerous across half forward.

Gresham is a big upgrade on Menzies. Seriously, people rate Menzies was too high. He wouldn’t be getting a game in about 16 other clubs.

Jack Peiris. Free one game for Saints. Great speed and tackle pressure.

The time of year we all look forward to the most. When our season is over and we can get onto trade period.

Stuff winning actual games of football.

His mum hates us lol

I think the better question about Gresham would be "would he be good enough to play in the forward line of prelim teams. If the answer is yes then you would take him for the right price.

My answer to this would be “yes” (except maybe Brisbane, Cameron, Bailey and McCarthy is a pretty good setup).

I was assuming everyone being fit, which is obviously a massively flawed assumption. If everyone is fit he’s not better than either Wright or Stringer.

He’s then in the mix with guys like Perkins, Menzie and a few others. Is he an improvement on Menzie. Sure. What is Gresham’s ceiling? Is it a small forward who roles through the middle in patches and kicks 20 goals? Or is it a stay at home small forward who kicks 45. If it’s the latter he makes a difference.

His career high goals in a season is 35. He needs to get there again to matter for us.

His best in the last 5 years is 21. If he’s that player, I don’t know whether he helps. His ability to go through the middle doesn’t really help us at his size.

Gresham has just been found out over time. He doesn’t have any weapons.

Who else is in our forward line?

2MP, Langford, Stringer
then Jones or Weid maybe…

Then…

Remind me of all these potent forwards we have?

Perkins potentially? but where are the good small forwards with pace, flair and the ability to apply defensive pressure?

Menzies is building and will continue to get better, i think Gresham has reached his peak and has regressed.

Im happy with Gresham. He is a free agent.

We arent blessed with draft capital to trade.

I think he is best 22 in our side and lets us recruit a young kid with potential to blood in the meantime.

Bit like McKay and Reid

Is it wrong to have two good small/medium forwards?
