2023 trade talk (Part 3)

Also 13 from saints. I’d include Hobbs or Caldwell in the trade. We can’t play them all.

Not saying we shouldn’t be all in on Oliver, though I still think nothing will eventuate with Oliver leaving Melbourne.

Just that short of going hard on a player of his calibre the club just needs to sit tight and draft more. Yeh, our hand isn’t the best but adding another top 10 pick to the list will still help. We have holes everywhere and still need to overturn so many players

Especially 8 and 13 which might be 13 and 18 once all of the compensations are settled.

Note: 13 if we do the Shiel to Saints deal.

We’re simply not at the level to attract those types of elite players with no excess baggage. What an elite Oliver will do is not only improve our list, but it also enables us to attract top talent like Naughton as a FA next year to really start plugging holes. Oliver will literally make our midfield elite and is exactly what our side needs. We’ll be lucky if any of our picks over the next decade end up being close to Oliver’s talent. It’s a no-brainer.

We’ve taken many top 10 picks over the last 3 years with a considerable amount of capital spent on KPPs. We can afford to sit two drafts out (especially one as compromised and top heavy as this years) for an elite mid. People keep going back to Shiel, but Shiel was never what our midfield needed. He was surplus to our needs. Oliver’s strengths are literally our weakness.

We need to make use of players like Merrett, Wright and Langford before they decline. Otherwise we’re going to be stuck in mediocrity for another decade with no obvious A-grade talent coming through. Unless we’re all collective happy to bottom out for the next 3 years so we can collect A-grade talent, but we know that’ll ruin the development and culture of our younger players (if we even retain them).

How we finished the year is absolutely unacceptable. I’m sick of our midfield combination. It’s so unbalanced and lacks the grunt and defensive work. Despite being down and on the back of a 10-week absence, Oliver’s finals series is much better than anything any of our players have produced in finals since 2004.

At this point the pick 13 Shiel trade seems just to be Ralphy having strange dreams and Reporting on them. Doubt that’s happening

The fact that Brad has been given the licence to cut away at the list…… he is very much committed to making us as competitive as possible. Even if that means trading draft picks.

It’s a whole of club change. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is thinking about our development program in the VFL, and looking at players who will slot in there…… and provide cover for the AFL side with injuries.

Nope, that is well stacked for the chickens

I mean historically it’s has been North that was the buyer in these situations and Hawthorn the seller.

(There’s no compensation picks, this is a trade situation)

12 months after

If Essendon had said they just wanted to bring in a whole lot of experienced players to one year rebound, I would have said I respect that, but that’s not what I think my skill set is

and a month after

But this club is committed to doing everything properly, no matter how long that takes. Short-term fixes and sugar hits are not the key to long-term success

I guess we’re back to

Yeah can’t wait for us to draft another player around the 10 who maybe in 5+ years will be good but who really knows because we have a terrible history of player development.

Get some good quality experienced ■■■■■■■ players in the club, players who know success, have seen success, and can help fix this dog ■■■■ culture we have which I think is probably the main issue we have with transforming the on-field performance of this club.

Some non #1 draft pick 18 year old fresh from school ain’t doing that anytime soon, and by the time they are in their prime our actual good quality players atm are basically retired.

Brad is just happy he is finally at a club that can attract players. I am surprised we are still able to attract a lot of players, if guys did their research we would be the last club I’d wanna come to.

Hopefully he doesn’t let it go to his head and go Full Crazy Vossy on us.

We did that with Shiel, Smith, Saad and Stringer. It didn’t work that well

Yeah but this Gresham, Oliver and Goldstein!

I love the fact that people here are salivating at Dorodo saying we are close to landing a “big name”.

He has been saying for the past 20 years that each of his choices for the club will be a star and will meet either our long term or immediate needs. In the main, they haven’t.

So why should we treat this comment as a rolled gold prediction?

Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti is coming out of retirement?

Supporters need to get their head around the difference between rebuild & culture change.

Are we rebuilding?
No.

Are we focussed specifically on culture change?
Yes.

That will take time, and is a lot harder than doing a full rebuild.

As I said above. I think Brad has a specific MO to make this club competitive, first and foremost. The fact we have gone out and got McKay & Gresham, tells me we’re not rebuilding.

No one at our club is fit. they are always injured and in a cycle of recovery or being played hurt

We’re so scared of taking risks and past failures that we think trading for Oliver is a short-term sugar hit? It’s like many of you haven’t paid attention to every one of our failures in the last 19 years. Oliver is arguably better as an inside mid than Jobe. Let that sink in. In fact, I’d say he’s the best inside mid in the league. Do we really think Parish is that player for our team? Please.

Imagine telling people in 2020 that Collingwood would win a premiership by trading Treloar, Grundy and Stephenson? And we’re crying about a draft pick in a heavily compromised draft that’s more likely to end up being a wasted pick than an A-grader? A pick in the teens after compensation and academy.

The only way it would make sense not to go for Oliver is if we have guaranteed A-graders on our list (which we don’t have except Merrett) or Harley Reid is coming. It makes sense for North to skip him because they’re stacked with potential superstars. We’ll just end up in no-mans land like St Kilda if we don’t do something about it.
